Thunder Tiger Raptors 30-90 - Imperio > Clutch liner gone in 60 seconds! What a great first heli experience!

Ok, I think I should win the title of the worlds fastest clutch killer! My first attempt at heli joy went like this: After spending about 30-40 hours of building , wiring, setting up, canopy finishing, etc..the moment finally arrived! It would be the glorious moment when the heli will break ground and defy gravity for a few feet above the ground in a hover. This was obviously not on my Craptor 30's agenda for the day! The Craptor 30, decided to reward me for all my hard work of bringing it to life with all but 60 seconds of on the ground 1/4 throttle stick blade spin. The engine was about 1/4 throttle, blades spinning, I was down on the ground checking the tracking when all of a sudden I heard a metallic shriek and the tail rotor stopped spinning. Oh-oh. I shut the engine down immediately and checked the cause. First I thought the belt was slipping. Upon inspection of the tail rotor, I discovered the tail pitch bushing and pitch fork (aftermarket metal pitch fork) decided to end their marriage and get seperated. No big deal I thought, I will just remarry them with some locktite. As I put the Craptor on the table, I checked the belt for tightness as well. No problem there. This is were it gets exciting! I caught a glimpse of a black ring hanging below the clutch bell. The clutch liner! The clutch liner seperated from the clutch bell and fell right out! I don't know the cause of this, I epoxied the liner in the clutch bell with the epoxy that came with the kit. I used a "dummy" insert to make sure the liner gets glued evenly. There was plenty of epoxy on the liner when I inspected it after it fell out. What is up with this? I feel like taking this Craptor to a tall bridge and showing it what obeying instead of defying gravity really means!!!! Ok, now that I vented, my question is, can I get the clutch bell out without splitting the frames?

Could there be some corelation between what we call our helicopters?
I call mine a "Raptor" and it works great except when "I" screw up. You call yours a "Craptor". Just a thought...

My motto is this..Fly...Rebuild...Fly

Clutch

Next time take some Scotchbrite and scuff the bell, clean with rubbing alchohol and use JB weld.Guarantee you will never have a problem.

Well, close to 60,000 of these things have been sold and you may be the first to have a glued in liner fall out. There have been reports that people have assumed that the liner has been glued in but it wasn't. Since you know you glued yours in something is wrong. As far as I know, all helicopters have their liners glued in with epoxy so either your gluing technique is poor or the epoxy supplied is poor. I suspect you didn't use enough glue. It's been two years since I built my newest R30 and the inclusion of epoxy in the kit is new so I don't know about the quality of the glue. I glue mine in with J.B. Weld. It really holds but is hard but not impossible to remove when it's time to change liners. Hope this helps.

Seneca, your posts remind me of "that guy" who laughs when someone falls and breaks an arm. (Or a clutch liner).

Somehow I get this feeling that the longer I own this "glorious bird" the more familiar I will be with all the numbers that start with "PV" if you know what I mean.

Hi,

Most machined metal parts will have an oil residue left on them, clean them it with lacquer thinner or break cleaner/degreaser before trying to locttiting them or gluing them.

Throw away the epoxy tt gave you and pick up some devcon 30minute for blade roots & clutch lining (jb weld 24hr is the best for the liner but 30min devcon works well). Epoxy can vary quite abit on quality and I am sure what tt supplies is the cheapest crap they can find. I usually clean the clutch bell up and the back of the liner with lacquer thinner.

Its possible that the 1/4 throttle was at the point where the clutch could of been slipping causing heat build up, heat will destroy epoxy quickly not to mention it will also wear out your clutch liner quickly. Best bet is to stay near idle or up near the hover point, anything between for long periods of time will probably wear the liner way too quick.

Don't worry about throwing it off a bridge, between your brain and gravity the helicopter will learn what hitting the ground is.

Seneca, Where these grips shown below designed for 85g wood blades or 110g fiberglass blades?

Don't have to take the clutch bell out

Just lay the heli on it's side with the engine removed and work up in there. I've done two this way and they're still going.

Clutch bell in our out... works for me... I just ressurected 3 shuttles and I redid all the linings in them. I just gave the glue a full 24h period to cure prior to running them.

Once the engine is out, you can carefully hold the pinion with some pliers and you can unscrew the clutch bell. Reglue the liner, and the screw on to the pinion.

"Raptor"

I personally do not own a "Raptor/Craptor", and by what I have seen of these copters I am glad that I don't!
How many broken clutches, clutch liners and other misc. parts does it take before you realize that you ultimately own one big paperweight????

Just my opinion.

What a load!

Well, that suprises me. Were not you and I just talking about how far a raptor has taken one of our friends? We both agreed that the best thing he ever did was get a raptor. And, did we not just see a first time flyer have unbelieveable sucess with a raptor on his FRIST flight?

I think the real problem lies not with the Raptor but the people it attracts with its affordability. Personally, I have two Raptors and I have had ZERO problems. Sure I busted a clutch.....after 20 gallons. Twelve bucks later and I am working on the second twenty gallons.

It is not uncommon for a beginner to have problems first time out of the gate. It is called getting experience. I will admitt that having your clutch liner fall out is a little on the uncommon side but nonetheless things do happen. You will find as you move forward in this hobby that you will have much more success if you learn from your mistakes and build on your failures.

Poor is the carptener who blames his tools.

Flatspin - like all the others have said - just fix it and Fly It... I think the scuffing of the metal is the key point here. I usually scuff mine with steel wool and they all hold well.

BTW Seneca - great to see you back in form... LOL (he has helped me a LOT too...

BTW, my kit came with a shim, heavy duty clutch and epoxy in the box. Bought from Heliproz about 2 months ago. The liner was not glued in though. As far as scuffing the clutch bell, I think the clutch did a thorough job of that when the liner came out. Judging by the metallic shriek anyways.
