Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > rebuilding an OS 61SX H WC, Need help ASAP

I'm replacing the piston, ring and cylinder in my OS 61SX H WC.

The top of the piston has an arrow on the top. Does theat arrow point toward the exhaust port?

Also what is the best way to compress the ring and slide the piston into the cylinder?

Thanks!

I think I got it

I think I got it... Yes the arrow looks like it needs to point toward the exhaust port. At least that's where the old piston pointed. Tapping the cylinder onto the piston seams to get the ring to slide in. Since there is a chamfer on the cylinder base to guide the ring into the seating area.

If I'm wrong please let me know. I plan on cranking up this engine tomarrow.

Thanks!

Yes, arrow points towards exhaust port. And as for installing the ring... oh never mind it's too late now We'll find out tomorrow. Good luck Volkul!

Ken, no need to worry - I was just going to give my "standard dissertation" on installing piston rings when I realized that you said you already had it assembled. Any piston ring is a delicate thing, model engines even more so. The slightest bend or nick and it is ruined. As I am sure you know there is a "key" in the ring groove to prevent the ring from turning after installation and having one of it's ends "snag" in a port. When properly assembled the ring's ends will ride in an uninterrupted area of the liner (this is one of the reasons for the installation arrow on the piston also). If one attempts to "cram" the piston and ring assembly into the liner without first aligning the ring ends over the key it is a guarantee of a bent (or broken) piston ring. I hope this eases your mind, I did not mean to alarm you.

Well NUTS

My impatience will be my undoing, after hearing what you had to say about the ring being keyed I had to look again.

Yep, I broke the ring. NUTS!

Well live and learn, this mistake just cost me a piston and ring. Fortunately the cylinder was not harmed.

Thanks for your help, I hope others can learn from my error.

Rebuilding An Engine

Hey volkul, there is another little trick you may use to reassemble an engine, if you forget which way a piston goes back in and the connecting rod hasn't been removed from the piston look on the lower part of the rod, you should see some swirl marks on the side of the rod that faces the back cover of the engine, where it was touching the cover. -------BladeRunner
