Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > After Run Oil in YS Engines

Someone told me that it was not a good idea to use after-run oil in YS engines, due to the fact that the diaphragm could be damaged.

Has anyone had problems from this?

I have been putting some after run in my YS 's through the pressure nipple on the back. I hold the heli upside down and spin the motor to get the oil down toward the bearings. I have no clue whether it is getting to the front bearing this way or not. I have only been doing this for a couple of months, after I discovered how rusty my bearings were getting. This is a very high humidity location.

I looked back to some old posts, many people said after-run oil is just over-priced Marvel Mystery Oil, is petroleum based.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I do not use an after run oil in my YS engines. I do run the engines dry after each flying session. This does leave one problem however if you are doing what YS recommends and not using castor oil in your fuel. Synthetic oils primarily "bead" and are not too good at leaving an oil film on metal parts. This would not be good in a high humidity environment.

The reason not to use anything with a petroleum base in the fuel or as a after run is that it will cause the silicone diaphragm to swell up like a over cooked noodle and be useless!
I personally use a fuel (I mix my own) with 2% castor oil. This is not enough castor to "pool" on the diaphragm and blow it (especially if you run it out at the end of the flying session), but enough to leave a "film" of oil on the internal parts of the engine. I just wish that they would come up with a synthetic oil that would leave a film!
I have had no problems with a synthetic/ castor blend in the YS engines in over hundreds of flights. I've never replaced a diaphram either! (knock on wood )

Hope this helps!

Ys has their own oil , but the other stuff may warp the gaskets that cover the carb channels and regulator , it will get soaked and clog up the diaphram at some point .. if you do this then remove the carb and regulator before you store it with oil , prefer not to use afterun

considering the cost of the diagphram and other
stuff, paying the price for the YS after-run oil is
worth it IMO if you want to use an after-run.

Thanks for the information, I'll call Performance Specialties and get some of their oil.

RE the Perf Spec oil, get a quart, which will come as 4 eight ounce bottles, then split it up with your friends. More economical that way, ~$7 a bottle shipped.

I use the Ultra Oil from YS Performance only when the engines will sit for a extended time. The main thing it to not use Petroleum oil, use a synthetic. I have heard of some using Mobil One. With good field habits of draining the tank and running the fuel out of the engine at the end flying day and keeping the fuel jug or can closed up as much as possible to prevent the alcohol from drawing moisture you should be fine. Today’s fuels have rust inhibitors, but these don't do any good if you leave un-burnt fuel in the engine at the end of the day. Methanol is Hygroscopic; it will draw moisture from the air. When you burn out all the alcohol you will leave only oil behind at the end of the day. Most rust in engines is from poor field habits. In 22 years of flying I never had a rust problem. In the summer we have high humidity where I live, 80 to 100%. If these field habits work here they should work anywhere.
