Tools and Field Equipment > Question for machinist types..bearing interference fit

I have blown out the 1-way bearing in my KSJ start-wand twice in three months. The local bearing supply company wants $32 for the OEM replacement bearing (I can get a complete KSJ knock-off wand with the same bearing for $50).

Anyway..I bought a 10mm ID 1-way from boca for $16 shipped. The OD of this replacement bearing is 14mm. The original 1-way had an OD of 18mm. I have to lathe a 2mm thick "liner insert" so I can use this less expensive bearing. I have no problem up til now. My question is what ID should I make the sleeve so that the bearing is reasonably easy to remove, still functions as a 1-way bearing, and does not slip while starting my motor. IOW, if the OD of my 1-way bearing is exactly 14.00mm the ID of the bore it is being pressed into should be ??.??mm. Note..I will be doing the finish cut on the sleeve ID after the sleeve is pressed into the start adapter.

TIA,
Magoo

Magoo, I think you will have a hard time maintaining the press on the sleeve. .002 thousanths of an inch max , to answer your question.

2MM is very flimsy to hold any decent press. I you go for a .001 interferance it would still take high strength Locktight to make it stay. If you have room to put a flange on one end it will be much stronger. When you press in the OD the ID will shrink. If it was a good press it will be "broach" time when you try to put the bearing in. If you put the bearing in first then press the sleeve in it will be there from now on

Oh, I see what you're getting at. I was going to press the sleeve into the Starter Housing with a much thicker wall than 2mm. Then, I'd lathe it down to the 2mm thickness when it was in its new home. I was also going to put the sleeve into the fridge and slightly heat the starter adapter, so they'd go together more easily.

Thanks,
Magoo

If you are going to finish machine it after you press it in then that will work but I would still use "stud" lock and grade "T" primer of the od of the bushing.
