Someone please tell me that this engine gets easier to start as it breaks in!

My Hobbico with two 1500 ma packs has to be freshly charged in order to get the 91 going

The big ones

They do get easier, I went through this with my OS .91, it's a good pain though. My new starter is a Sullivan Dynatron on 14 cells, it still needs to have a fresh charge to spin the motor early Saturday morning. After the first start of the day now that it's all broken in, it's a piece of cake to start.

Try loosening the plug till ya get it going. It relieves some of the compression. I had the same problem with an OS60.

I burnt out a "120" starter in the early stages of getting the 91 going, I now run a Dynatron with 15 cells and a head shim in the engine.

Out of interest I put a clamp ammeter on the cable to the dynatron and measured an 80 amp peak current (for a quite a duration too) so don't go trying sealed lead acid batterys 'cos you'll kill them in quick order!

Once the first start of the day is done (a second or two normally) a quick flick of the starter is all that in needed to spark it back up even after a rest/cooldown.

Go to your Auto electrician and ask him to rewind your starter with a Torque wind. The motor will have plenty of grunt to turn over your 91. Just hold on otherwise you might lose your hand at the wrist

The 91 has about a gallon of fuel through it now, and it starts fine.

80 amps

80 Amps?

Get a cordless drill, it's cheaper, lighter, lasts longer, has more torque,

and you can put up shelves for Mrs Smith.

Yup 80 amps, measured with a clamp ammeter, it peaked at 82 ish then slowly decayed below 80 as the engine spun up and dropped to between 35 and 40 while turning over normally and down to less than twenty as the engine fired and ran.

I took Eagle's advice and I had a local shop rewind my el cheapo starter. I figured if he botches the job, all I'm out is $22 for a new el cheapo starter.

The guy said to increase torque, not only does the motor armature need to be rewound, but the armature needs to be beefed up. All in all it cost me around $21 for the job.

I rushed home to try it on my YS80 and Viola!!! It turned it effortlessly. Now I have to be careful not to flood the engine because I might just end up breaking the connecting rod if my "new and improved el cheapo" doesn't stall at all.

Thanks Eagle!!!!

Hi Dave,

Glad to help out. I just received my new OS 91 and gave it a run on the weekend. Starts nice and easy with my modified dynatron on 12v.

Happy flying

12 V Gel cell & Dynatron!

I have had no problems after I switched to the dynaton. I initially was using my cars battery to give the amps I needed to turn over the 91

Hey Volkul,

Problem was, out here in the boondocks all the LHS have is the el cheapo starters. Kinda silly for me to order a $69 starter overseas and have to pay shipping + 13% tariff and local taxes for a starter.

I'm sure once I tell the other local flyers about it, they don't have to think twice about upgrading to the monster engines because it's one less item to worry about.

How do you get the starter shafts to stop sliping on the Sullivan Dynatron. I wired an additional 12volt batery into my flight box for 24 volts. When trying to start new motors esp,. Rossi 60 and up I cant get the shaft tight enough on the starter.
Would I be better off getting the Sullivan Dynatron rewound for extra torque. I wonder if the mod Dynatron at 12 volts would torque harder than a standard Dynatron at 24 volt? My flight box is heavy. Would like to loose the extra battery.
Has anyone tried a couple or three car packs on a Dynatron?

Thanks

I use TWO 12v hobbico batteries. I have them taped together. I have the negative from one soldered to the positive of the other. I can charge them sperately, use 12 or 24 on the fly. Try it, you'll like it. the cost from tower is about $30.

That is what I did with my flight box. I put an extra set of quick connectors on my box pannel. I can plug into the 24 volts for the Dynatron or use the 12 volt connectors for the Dynatron or my other starters. It sounds like some may be getting the same torque with one 12 volt and a power wind.

also with all this power I can't stop the slipping of the starter shaft on the starter. The Dynatron does not have a pin through it. The shaft is slightly smaller in diameter as well.
Some one mentioned spacers, do they make them for this app and where might I find them.

Thanks
