Anyone charging LiPos with a Triton charger?

I have been charging a 3s4p LiPo pack rated 7800 mah with my Triton charger and not sure if it is fully charging the pack.
I charge using the 11.1 volt setting at 2.5 amps.
It will charge at 2.5 amps for approx. 2hrs, putting in around 5000 mah, then drop back to 1 or 2 hundred mah for another hr. or so adding another 200 mah. Does this sound right? The pack is discharged to 9 volts before charging and will read 12. 6 volts after charged.

Chargine Li-Po with a Triton

Robin,

Call up Great Planes and ask them this question. I would be interested to know their answer!

My Triton is supposed to have an update to allow full charge of the Lithium batteries when selected from a memory. I tried charging my
7.2 or 7.4? Volt Li-Io batteries and it also didn't put in what they were rated at (although as in your case I am not sure they were fully discharged).

The Tritons seem to be getting pretty popular around here.

Please leave an update on this forum

Thank you,

Michael

Just talked to Hobby Services about charging the LiPo. They said that more than likely the 5200mah that I am getting into the battery is really correct. They haven't had a lot of experience with the LiPos but haven't heard of any problems of the charger reporting incorrect capacities(heard that before). They did tell me that the triton is rated for 6000mah cells maximum, and would more than likely shut down at that point anyway.
I have, after the charger peaks the pack and shuts down, gone ahead and tried to repeat the charge process.(after a cool down period) It will only charge for a couple of minutes, sense the peak and shut down. So I am fairly certain the pack is fully charged.

Oh ya, as far as the software upgrade,(mine dosen't have it by the way) That is to fix a bug that the charger has in remembering capacities in the memory mode. They didn't think it would have any thing to do with what I am seeing. They will upgrade the software for anyone that wants it for free.

Anyone else using the Triton to charge these high capacity packs? Whats your findings?

Charging Li-Po

Robin,

What about using the discharge function and discharging at a slow
rate to see what you can get out of the pack....and then see what it will put back into it during a charge?

Good Question Michael,

I will give that a try this evening and see what it comes up with.

So does that mean it won't charge my 8200 4S4P pack? just considering one but am unsure if it will be man enough

Paul,

Even though Hobby Services told me it would only charge to 6000mah, the triton will charge higher. It turned out I had a problem with the battery pack itself which Charlie at Advanced Energy Tech(makers of these packs) took care of for me. I did purchase an Orbit V6.2 charger
that I like better than the Triton to charge the LiPos. I don't think the Triton fully charged the packs as I get a lot more realistic capacities with the Orbit. I can get 2 to 3 hundred more mah into the packs with the Orbit over the Triton.

Hi Robin
thanks for the reply .. I was wondering about the Triton, currently it's the "easy option" as it's stocked locally ..or I can wait a week for the Schulze 330

Beyond that I feel I might be paying for facilities I won't use .. the Orbit is double the money and tho' I've got stacks of SubC cells I don't think I'll want to go back to them
