I'm going to get a radio soon so I can start getting some sim time in. I plan to get a raptor 30 kit and build it in my spare time within a few months, but I plan to fly alot in the sims first until I consider my sim flying adequate to be able to control a heli without question. I will probably be getting all my stuff ready to be flying the day after Xmas, so I have lots of sim time ahead of me. What I need to know now is this. What would serve me best, going cheaper and buying something like an RD6000 super which has servos and a receiver, or spending my money on just a radio like an 8U and buying my servos and receiver on a month to month basis as my funds will allow. I want to make sure I won't outgrow a 6 channel radio too soon, but if it will serve me well for the next couple of years given that I have no experience whatsoever as of yet would I be better off just getting something like that, and keep all my costs down for a while? Either way I will be getting a radio this week, and a raptor kit soon after so my heli will be completely built by the time I'm ready to fly. This decision has been driving me nuts. I may have up to 500 to spare this week, but I know I will have 300. I'm just confused as to whether I will outgrow the 6 channel radio too soon. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions in the 500 neighborhood appreciated as well. Thanks.

If it is going to be some time before you get everything together I would go ahead and buy an 8 or 9 channel. If you don't have the funds this week to get the whole radio package save you rmoney until you can buy the package. If you are a Futaba person go ahead and save to get the 9c. If you are open to any brand check out the JR8103 as well. Both of these radios will take you far. There is nothing wrong with the Airtronics RD6000 super. It is a great radio. But the 8\9 channels will keep you going for awhile.

So my choice would be save up until you can purchase an 8\9 channel radio system, the servos will work fine for you on a .30 size machine. And will save you in the long run, instead of buying the transmitter then the flight gear.

Hope this helps,

OK cool thanks for the input fellas. I will go ahead and wait 2 more weeks if necessary to get my radio. Now I'm looking at something more like this, and may even be able to swing it this week if I'm lucky. I'm really excited about getting a radio but I will make myself wait if I have to. I don't want to make a mistake and get a radio I will soon find inadequate. Now I'm looking at something in the 8-9 channel range with receiver and servos

I tried to link to it on 2 different sites but I'm having a linkage problem. I'm looking at the Futaba 9CHP PCM with R149DP receiver and (4) 9001 sport servos

I hear you .. I am in the same situation as you. I will be purchasing either the Raptor 30 or Sceandu 30./50 ? - I was leaning on the RD600 but after reading more I think it might be wiser to get the better radio.. I have been putting alot of time into the sim while I have been saving. I am ready to start building it.

If you are sure you're going to be in the hobby to stay, consider that while you will have many helis, you will have only a few (or one) radio. Choose wisely, and plan for the future. That was my reasoning for getting a 9chp instead of the common 6 channel model.

I got a used JR8103 with 649 receiver for $350. Haven't had any problems with it. Even figured out throttle to cyclic mixing in idle-up only without the manual! I have 3 helis and 1 airplane in it. I use some of the other models for setup purposes. Getting this radio was one of the best purchases I ever made in this hobby.

Buy the best radio you can!! this is the heart of your flying, you will restrict yourself with any of the 6 channel radios i'm familiar with, esp. the 6hs by futaba, you will use the trannie more than any other thing you will buy so go for broke, i have flown almost all of them and ended up with the 9zhp. but any good radio will give you the things you need,. c-ya

I admit i'm a novice but i would also recommend the Jr Xp8103. Radios like jr XP652 will work fine but later on you will want more.

Just my 2 Cents

I have been flying now for 4 years, and use the RD6000 for everthing all 13 helicopters, except the scale Bell 222 I use the Stylus because of retracts etc. I used the RD6000 at the 2001 Nats for Class II and all my 3d flying is done with the RD 6000. Unless you plan to go with govenors etc, (what do you need them for?) Youll need to get more like everone is saying, but for me, I dont need any more. Learn the basic set ups and Learn to fly the helicopter instead of the gadgets flying it for you. Spend that hard earned money on fuel, fuel, and more fuel, youll be better off.

I have wanted to say that very thing for a long time but was afraid of the bashing I might get for it.

Just because you run a govenor does not mean you do not have to set the helicopter up. If you beleive this you are mistaking. If you don't like using gadgets to help you fly, take that little gadget off the tail rotor. No you do not need all the features to fly a heli but they are sure nice in a bind. If you wanted to you could use an airplane radio (non-computer) and fly a heli. Would I recommend it, uh...no.

Again, the Airtronics RD6000 is a great radio for what it is. But if you can afford an 8/9 channel, why limit yourself? You may want retracts on a scale later down the line. You may want that govenor when you can't get that .50 or 80/90 size to quit overspeeding in decents. If you try to go in and change the pitch or throttle curves you're messing up the curves when you need to go the other way. There are more features that just make these radios better in the long run.

Please understand, I'm not flaming anyone. Have fun!

yeah what radio

I just bought my first heli, It's a z230 gasser and I was thinking futaba or jr, money ain't a factor saved $5000 just to get into helicopters so from this budget I've already spent $2000 the rest is for radio and much needed extra parts. Like trainning vids a gear etc.

help with a really reliable radio as for it will be used for future helis tothx everyone.
