e-MS Composit Hornet > How good is it possible to get your tail, 240

I finally got the tail pretty smooth and the 240 set up properly (will hold hover with servo arm at perpendicular), but I notice when climbing out a little of dropping, the tail will spin a little like on a rate gyro and then come back in. I know that this if from a slow servo + slop but, how good should I be able to get a hornet tail. When should I just say, its as good as its gonna get, enjoy it. I guess im just used to 401 + dig servo. Also anyone who is a familiar with a 240, when you adjust the ATV on the rudder chan, what does it do, I need to go reread the manual, but it seems to slow user initiated rudder, but it also seems to speed up the servo for its own heading hold corrections. I noticed that by uping from 50% to 100 the tail held allot better.

P.s., I still have training gear on and the heli weighs a ton. The only reason it is able to fly is because Im running from a power supply.

I've got a 401 and a standard ms15 servo on my hornets tail and it is absolutely rock solid stable, i can loose control of my heli and it can be all over the sky but the one thing i can rely on is the tail always staying facing me, if it didnt i would crash it!,

This probably doesnt help you much with the 240 but you should be able to get it near perfect i would have thought?

I've used the 240 on both hawks I've owned, and still use it on the one I currently have. The first one was with a 3003, and the present one is with a 9202. I read an article that curtis wrote a while ago about setting up gyros, and used his methodology. I set the rudder atv at 120 to 140 %. This results in the linkage binding when the heli is on the bench, but in flight the gyro "takes away" some of that user input and does not allow it to bind. I have the gain set between 60 & 75. I also take GREAT pains to insure the linkage is as free and smooth as possible to little or no effort at all is needed to move it. The servos I used are very slow, but the results are great. The tail is rock solid in HH. Piros have gotten so fast that I had to back it back down a little. For the money, the 240 is amazingly simple and solid. Granted, its not a 401, but I've had excellent results with the smaller heli's.

240

This post was specifically in regards to a 240 on a CP hornet.

Make it idiot-proof, and someone will make a better idiot

Sorry, I was just commenting on the 240's performance in general. If it works good on one, it should work good on the other!

I have 240 on my CP Hornet. After painfuly long tweeking, I can get the gyro to about 50% gain. It will hold heading in hovering but some days are better than others. The other night, I was putting on a Hacker B20-22 with 11T pinion (the only one I have left ). I balanced the flat bottoms and the tail as much as I could and low and behold... It was rock solid at 50% gain. What a pleasure... Only problem was I did all that inside my living room. I got carried away and climbed too high and then one of the tail gears slipped and since I was close to the wall, I crashed into it. The heli fell down about 7 feet. Only the undercariage came loose (phew) so in a matter of minutes I was back in action. But now the heli was drifting IN HH mode!!. I tweaked the tail some to get more positive pitch from the T/R. It stopped drifting and the gain is 45-50%. Some vibs still haunt me (I will try to address them over the weekend) but looks OK. Sudden pitch changes throw the tail about 1/16 of a turn left and right but the GY240 overcomes them quickly.
I have a GWS Micro BB in the tail. Thinking maybe HS50 next time.
Hope this helps some..

What you are describing I cured by replacing my stock carbon torque tube with a .078 mm steel wire drive. The carbon rod 'whips' when heavy load is put on by the motor. You can feel this by seeing how far the tail will turn when you hold the main gear. It is like a SPRING with that carbon rod. Others are starting to use a 3 mm carbon rod with 2 mm ends (Walt is making one).

Walt, the extended backwards right-side-up flight was the most impressive part of the vid. Best flying Hornet I've seen yet. Now, give us the complete specs and/or pics of the tail setup please (down to the last detail)!?!?

Thanks and great work.
