Beautifullllllllll.

How was the image quality out in the sunlight? Did you have trouble seing the LCD screen?

Looks like we have a winner...

Now that is just plain freaking awesome!!!

They need to get the prices down a little more though. For the corporate arena 2k might be fine and dandy but if they want to hit a bigger market I would have to say under $800 is a definite. If that only cost $700-800 I would buy one just cause its a cool toy, hell I dont even do aerial photography yet

JC,

Image quality in sunlight: clear and bright, I was highly tempted to fly the heli from the image, I could see the image responding predictably to the controls - I held back only because the flight plan for this was principally a safety test - i.e. could I still fly the heli at all!

BigD - I have to agree, awesome but at a price. I expect it has to come down some time.

Hi,
Eyetop screen is on the side which means that your dominant eye is unblocked!
Feels like wearing glasses too!
I know where you can find those directly. Try http://www.ingineo.net/index.php! for Eyetop "pro".
I have some pictures too with a flycam!

Hi, I'm now flying FPV with the CV-3

that's how I took this when I could not see the building directly at all for 100ft + trees.

it's not a matter of having you eye un-blocked, my experience is that you want the picture floating straight under the heli so that you're not hunting the skies for the machine having just been looking sideways - having said that I would love to see the flycam picturs, please post them?!

Just wanted to tell anyone interested in the Eyetop, that 47st. Photo has several of them on Ebay with a "buy it now" price of $319 which is a lot cheaper than the price on the Eyetop site.

Hi Laurent,

I love that exhaust pipe! I've been thinking of something along those lines myself but I hadn't thought of running it out THAT far. What's it made of?

And I just bought a pair of those eyetops off ebay/47th steet photo.

If that's your back yard, I'd never leave home. It's beautiful!

Hi Seaviper,

No you can't because Eyetop are glasses. However I do but it is not designed for this.

So you like countryside!

I just received a new pair of the eyetops. I haven't tried out the video portion yet (no time) but I did try them on and I was amazed to see how unclear and wavy the regular lens is.

There are ripples in the glass/polycarb (whatever it's made of) such that when u turn your head side to side (while focusing on a single object) the view goes clear/distorted/clear/distorted etc. I thought there might be a protective tear-off that needs peeling off but there isn't one, the glass is that goofy. I'm not sure I could fly with the view changing like that. I can read a road sign, then turn my head 10 or 15 degrees and it gets too blury to read it.

Do I have a lemon or is everybody's like that? I emailed the company, we'll see what they say.

Like I said I haven't tried out the video part yet. I hope to find time tonight to give that a spin.

Thanks, Randy

For anyone that's interested, I tried out the video, it's great. I watched a tape of a NASCAR race and the little tickers that travel across the top of the screen were clear as crystal. A TV commercial for a car came on and there was a lot of text at the bottom of the screen describing legal stipulations, interest rates and many other details--the text was very tiny and I could still read it. I believe the video is more than ample.

The issue of blurred vision through the clear part of the glasses is still up in the air. I emailed the company and they got right back to me and said they would send me a new, and better, lens with a better optical coating. I wonder how long it takes a package to travel from France to North Carolina? :-)

If push comes to shove, I'll just drill out the center part of the glasses and make peep holes to look through; although, that will be a last resort and hopefully won't be required if they send me an acceptable new lens.

I just received my eyetops also and the sunglasses are also wavy.

Also, the image flickers in mine. The troubleshooting guide says it is either a bad video source or low batteries, but using my freshly charged batteries I experience a flicker with no less than 4 different video sources, and they can't all be bad!

I have a first draft up of a mini-review I'm writing, here's the page:

Bill,
Here is a review by ZDNet that comes to about the same conclusions that you do. http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/review/2/2/5677.html It seems the EyeTop uses a monochrome LCD, and uses red, green and blue LEDs as backlights to generate color. That means the frame rate is 1/3 that of a real color LCD.

Wow that's got to hold the all time record for the worst slammin' on zdnet! I guess Gordon didn't like it.

Here's another thing - the wavy integral dark glasses that make you look like a "dolt" will be necessary to make the video image comparatively brighter wrt the outside world

I'm off now to feel all smug about my CV-3

cya

Yeah Julian, go rub it in now

I have mouths to feed, I can't be spending all my hard earned money on the fancy glasses!

Honestly though, for what I plan on using it for (aiming assist for video or digital stills), it will get the job done. The resolution is pretty impressive for such a cheap unit.

It's too bad about the wavy glasses though, that could be the deal killer if I can't keep an eye on my plane! I might have to buy some of the original Terminator Gargoyles and try to adapt them to the Eyetops.

Wish me luck...

Hi Bill,

Good job on the review. I actually had not noticed a flicker in mine so when I read what u said I ran and grabbed them and hooked them up to a few different video sources. Sure enough, there was the flicker. I guess I was so excited that I could see anything at all that I didn't notice the flicker. It's not too bad in mine, I went channel surfing and noticed that some scenes made the flicker more obvious than others.

The Golf Channel, with plain green fairways and little motion, showed more flicker than the SPEED Channel, where the cameras are constantly moving. Black and white channels (old movies) had no flicker that I could discern, which jives with the LCD comments above.

While I definitely have the flicker if viewing color images, I'm not sure I would have noticed it if it had not been pointed out. I let a couple people try them on and neither mentioned the flicker. Maybe we're just used to viewing poor quality TV images here in the South, we don't like to complain :-) I don't believe it will affect my heli flying.

The same can't be said for the wavy lens however. I'm still waiting for the replacement lens from France. They said they'd ship it express so I hope it gets here soon. They told me the one they're sending is better than what I currently have, but they also said they have a third lens coming out, I belive near the end of the year, that will be even better than either of the first two. I'll have to say the company is very responsive to email and I still have high hopes of putting together a very nice system for a modest price. Time will tell.

And thanks for showing the glasses in pieces, I was dreading trying to pull them apart to replace the lens. Was it easy or did it seem like it was on the verge of breaking when u pulled them apart? They have a warning in the manual to be vewwy careful.

Thanks guys,
Randy

The non-electronic side came out reasonably easy while pressing the tab on the inside of the frame. I couldn't see any obvious way to remove the electronic side, so thinking to myself 'no guts no glory', I just gave it a good yank and it slid apart. It is held in with two tabs protruding from the sunglass portion that must catch a small lip inside the electronic eyepiece. I can totally imagine this getting worn down after pulling it apart a few times, so heed their advice.

I just hope the reviewer on zdnet is wrong and this company is not a flash in the pan. It is a fairly thoughtful design and I can imagine a few different applications for it... imagine being a security installer who needed to aim cameras as part of the installation. They could plug each camera into the eyetops to give them a hands-free live preview while they secure the camera.

UPS is FAST from France. The UPS guy just left me a package from France and I tore it open to find the replacement lens for my eyetop. This 'second version' of the lens is, perhaps, slightly better than the first but we still need that third version of the lens coming out later this year.

This lens still has some waviness in the lens. I could probably fly the bird looking thru the lens but it depends greatly on exactly where in the lens u happen to be looking. Unfortunately, some of the clearest portions of the lens are in areas, like near the nose, where u probably wouldn't be looking through much of the time.

I still may dremel out a hole to look through. I found a guy who routinely shapes/cuts polycarb so I may get him to give it a whirl. I'll really look like a "dolt" with funny laughable lenses with holes in them. All I need is a red ball for the tip of my nose.

I'll play around with it more tonight. Hmmm....
