e-Century Hummingbird - Swift > Cellular phone charger for LiPo's?

I got a 2 cell 1200mAh Kokam for the HB. I dont want to splurge yet for a good Lipo charger just yet.

Could I adapt a desktop cellular phone charger for use? I know I'd need a 2 cell (old style) charger with built-in safety circuitry and so on. I noticed the Nokia 8110 is suitable. Any other suggested models?

balloon kokam!!!!

I was charging my kokam battery yesterday, and when I went back to check it, it looks like a ballon.
I guess, i was over charging it? I was charging at a rate of 1A. Is that too high.

Any chance you didn't set the number of cells correctly.

If you charge it at the wrong level, it will look like a helium ballon.

I assume you are using a proper Lithium Ion charger. Which Kokam, and which charger? One amp is ok for the 1020ma Kokams. Usually this problem is caused by the charger not being set for the right number of cells. If your charger automatically sets the number of cells, you need to watch it, because I have seen reports of chargers misreading the pack, and selecting the wrong number of cells.

How do you guys attach the power leads to the 2 cell Kokams?
There appears to be 3 logical terminals on the pcb : +, - and the series interface btw the two cells.

(Older 2cell 7.2v) Cell phone batteries use the safety charging circuit which monitors individual cells for charge balancing and prevent overcharging of individual cells. The interface terminal is used in the circuit.

I don't own a dedicated LiIon charger yet so question is, is this connection needed in the charge schemes or just a simple +/- terminal 2 pin connection? Won't this risk overcharge of individual cells in the latter scenario?

I successfully converted a cheap US$9 nokia 8110 cell phone (the original The Matrix 'banana' cellphone) desktop charger to charge my 2s 1200 kokams.

I dismantled an old 2-cell phone batt which i had, saved the safety circuit and the plastic housing, soldered the circuit terminals with a 3 pin lead. This sits in the charger. the 3 pin connector connects onto the kokams for charging. It monitors and balances the individual cells during charging.

It works but due to the low charge rate of 200mA, takes overnite. Oh well , can't complain. Get two packs and enough for 40 mins. flying a day.
