JR Heli Vibe - Airskipper - Sylphide - Venture > Voyager 50 tail drive pinion bearings failed?

On the 10th flight of my Voyager 50, I started to get a clicking noise from the tail drive pinion assembly. As you spin the rotor head by hand, the double bearing assembly goes, click, click, click, click. But when you take belt tension off of the tail drive pinion, the clicking noise goes away.

After removing the assembly from the helicopter, there is a notchy feeling to the lower bearing of the assembly. Could this have been caused by the belt being to tight? I had it adjusted where you could push the belt half of the distance between the two belts at the front pulley.

After talking to the guy at Boca Bearings to get a replacement, he thought it failed because of an alignment issue.

Anybody else had a failure in these bearings?

Nope not a problem

I have ran tons of fuel through mine without a single problem. After each 10 gallons or so I pull all bearings and push in new grease, reinstall and fly. Sounds like something is out of alignment someplace in your drive train on the heli. What do the teeth on your main gear look like?

Well upon closer inspection:

The teeth on the main gear look good. But when I hold the rear pinion up to it and spin them together, I can defenitely feel a high section (about 10 teeth long) on the main gear. I think I had the rear pinion a little to tight, and it was causing a stress point on the pinion and bearing when the high part of the main gear came around. When I re-assemble it, I will make sure the pinion clears the high spot smoothly.
