Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Needle Setting for OS91

I tried to break in my OS 91 today but I had a lot of trouble. I set the engine like the manual says and the low needle was set in the middle and the large needle was set at 2 turns out. I am running 30% cool power and I used one new OS 8 and Enya 3 plug.

The problem is two fold. First the engine would start right up but as soon as I took the glow ignitor off it would stall. Second when I could actually keep it started I would hover and within a minute of hovering the engine would just flame out. It looks like it has good smoke.

Please help me what am I doing wrong? What are the needle settings for the OS 91 after breakin.

Thanks

I broke in my OS 91 for the first time today, using an OS8 plug. I used the factory set position for the idle mixture, and had the main needle turned two turns out. I have heard of some problems using Cool Power 30%, so I'm using a mixture (1 part CP 30%, 2 parts CP 15%) that yeilds 20% nitro and 19.7% oil. The engine started right away, and its running rich. I was flying inbetween rain showers, so I flew only 1/2 tank, but I did some mild vertical accelerations (if anything about the 91 is mild ) and some autos - the engine immediately went to an idle and stayed there until I turned hold off.

Temp was in the lower 70's, humidity pretty high considering its been raining all weekend (as you would expect after finally finishing the Fury).

If your setup is similiar to mine, you may need to check out a lower nitro fuel, or adding head shims to lower compression slightly.

PS - several MA flyers have done extensive testing of different fuels for the OS 91, and I think they have settled on a new mixture containing 20% nitro and 18% oil. I think this is good, considering the 91's ability to suck fuel - might as well be fuel that's cheaper than CP 30%.

I've been using cp30% in two 91's for over 50 gallons now... Break in was pretty easy, was flying it hard on 3rd tank.

It can be tough to start at times. The weather is in the 40-low50's right now, the first start of the day takes a while to warm up. I leave the glow starter on until I get out to the flight line. It sounds like you're having low end problems... They are usually set real close at the factory setting...

As far as these things being thirsty... I have simialar flight times as I did with my YS61st2... You do have to run the 91's a little on the rich side... But boy do they have lots of power!!!

Flying freak,
how did you put your muffler on? specifically what did you use to seal between the muffler and engine. I have had some high temp orange gasket material foul a plug. I had some of the same problems you were discribing.
I am breaking in my 91 on 15%. The low end is at the factory setting(rich I think). The high end is at 1-1/2(rich also for 15%)
Right now its pulling 11 degrees on the freya with 680s.

I did use high temp gasket sealer, but my plugs seem fine, they are clean and glow very well. I am going to try a different jug of fuel to see if maybe my 30% is contaminated.

I actually just tried to do this but I couldn't even get the damn thing to turn fast enough to start. It was about 30 degrees out. I'm using a Hobbico 90 starter. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to start these engines cold.

Thanks

My settings are 1.5 out on main and low just a tad on the rich side. This is with 15% Wildcat or CP.
To start the engine... there are a few posibilities.

1- Park next to highpower lines, get a long cord for your starter, clip on and go.

2- Sullivan Dynatron at 24volts.

3- (My setup) Hobbico 180 starter, 14 cells of 70amp discharge Nicads from Hobby-Lobby.

It helps to loosen the plug on really cold days or when using Wildcat fuel with the thick oil.

flying freak,
The plugs on mine looked good to the naked eye. They also glowed well. They just would not run once the igniter was taken off the engine. I found that leaving the glow starter on about a minute or two while hovering allowed the glow plug work fine. Maybe it burned some of the crude of. I also turned the engine over with the glow plug removed to blow any of the gasket material that might be hanging around in the head.

What are you guys ending up with for final needle settings? I'm waiting for the weather to clear, so I've run only a half tank so far. I'm guessing main ~1.25, and the idle in an 1/8 from factory settings, based on what I've read so far.

Since I've run nothing except 30% for the last few years, I guess I'm really going to have to listen instead of looking at the smoke, since I'm using the 20/20 blend now.
