Anyone out there tried 690 blades? I doing a scale project and am considering a set of SAB FAI 690 blades with the 3.5 degree washout.

I'm running 95mm SAB tail blades on a stock boom. My 680's look like they have plenty of room, may another 20-25mm?

Any concern of boom strikes at this length? It's a scale 500 body so the tailboom is larger than the stock boom by a half inch or so.

thanks,

Raymond

Blades

I have not tried it myself and have not measured it, but, I've been told that 680's is as big as you can go even with the stock length tail blades.

The tailboom is .5 inches longer than stock, that's 6.35mm longer. You could get a cheapy 690 (or borrow one from a friend), mount it, and see if the tips touch. Also, If you don't plan on flipping and flopping the bird and only flying it in really nice weather etc. you could probably get away with a tiny bit of overlap, just don't pull back on the stick too hard!

blades...

Ari,
I'm not understanding you when you refer to the boom being .5" longer than stock. My boom is the stock R60 boom. The stock blades on a R60 are 660mm. Also, I don't think .5"= 6.35mm. it's more like a 1/4"?

I don't want to guess at it as I will be flying an expensive scale body, I just want someone to confirm if they work or not. I don't think I want to test it. I will use my 680's if I find I can't run the 690's safely. I'd hate to destroy a pretty scale heli because of my blades getting mixed up together...

I don't know of anyone using any 690's on one that I could borrow.

Right now the blades overlap about 1/4 inch if you measure the edge of each rotor disk at the tailboom level. If you come upwards an inch from the tail boom they are about even.

I may be pushing it trying to squeak out an extra half inch. I found a really nice set of FAI blades that are very heavy, 210 grams and have a washout built-in and I was thinking they could really work well for me if they would just fit.

The more I think about the longer blades and the extra weight it probably could boomstrike or rotorstrike a lot easier with blades that big and heavy. I don't want to increase the risk factor anymore than necessary on this particular project as it is a scale project.

Slant,

That's the same thing I've heard but just wondered if anyone has tried it and gotten away with it. I just want to have as much rotor disk above the heli as possible because it's going to be pretty heavy all up.

the diameter of the tailboom was more than stock by .5" or the length of the tailboom was longer than stock by .5"
I could have just been confused
