e-Century Hummingbird - Swift > Can I use part from other heli for HB collar mod

I have posted this question on "tail drifting" topic but I think I need to raise it as a seperate topic. I like to know if anybody can tell me if I can use part from other popular heli like JR, Raptor etc for HB collar mod. I have just contacted my LHS which is an authorised dealer for century heli. They don't carry mod parts and won't be until next year, they don't even have non stock pinions. Before I start ordering it from other country for just a small piece of metal I like to look around at my LHS. I don't know the inside diameter of the collar. The outside diameter and height of it I wouldn't think will matter as long it's not heavy. Can anybody suggest something?
Presently I have given up playing around with more powerful motor until I get HH gyro and seperate esc (I can't buy factory lighten CSM 200 either here). But until then any improvement on the heli with stock motor help.

The shaft is 3mm in diameter. I used a standard 1/8 inch Dubro wheel collar, and it fits fine. The collars sold for the HB have a raised ridge that rests on the inner race of the bearing and keeps the collar from rubbing on the outer race of the bearing. Since the standard wheel collar doesn't have this ridge, I cut an extremely thin piece of the black tubing to go inbetween the collar and the bearing. You have to be careful that whatever collar you use is not so thick that it touches the swash plate when the servos are moved to their limits.

I don't know what you mean by "too much play". The difference between 1/8" and 3mm is less than .007" and after the set screw is tightened there is no play. That does mean the collar will be off center by .007", but it is so small that the effect on balance is way to small to be measured. For the price difference + the shipping costs + the convience of buying it locally, I'll live with the little bit of offset. I don't know if Australia is totally metric yet or not, so maybe 3mm collars are easy to find there.

Dubro.

Smart thinking Jeff, I didn't think of it. I might even have those wheel collar. At least I can easily find Dubro collar here and cost $1 - 2.
I am suppose I can cut the sleeve (very thin) and use it to create a thin gap between the collar and bearing.

Other thing that I find need improvement is the skid. I break the skids basically every second flight (now you know how novice I am) where the leg join the skids.
I don't know what I can do to fix it and make it stronger. CA glue is great but not very strong.

Thanks guys.

I also was constantly glueing my skids back onto the CF rods. Finally, I replaced the CF rods with 1/16" music wire. I think the CF is too stiff, and the music wire only adds a gram or so. I also drilled all the way thru the skids, so the music wire goes thru the skids and is glued inside, instead of just resting on top. Also, the 1/16" wire is thinner than the 2mm CF, so they are looser fit in the heli frame and pop out in a hard crash instead of breaking. Here are some pictures that I posted that show the skids. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...15&pagenumber=2

Cool idea

That is a great idea to fix the skid. My lhs sells 2mm piano wire. Last night I wrapped a little piece of fiberglass cloth and epoxied the joints. It it breaks again I will try your setup.

I have the 1/8 Dubro collar and tried it last night on a 3mm drill bit. It is a little bit loose and if you wrap a layer of sticky tape it will make it nice and tight.

Some other skid options. Mine keep breaking as well and this is what I plan to do to fix it. I have seen the aluminum landing skids for the hummingbird on the helihobby web page. 20 bucks!!!! no way dude!
I plan on making my own out of 1/4 inch tubing. First I will get out the propane torch and bend the tube once to make two skids. I will then cut in the middle of the bend this will be the front of the skids. I will then measure back from the cut, and then chop off the excess. This way you only have to bend the tube once and you get skids that match. After that I plan on measuring the spacing for my carbon rods on the skid and drilling 2 holes in the top of both skids. I am only going to drill threw one side of the tube. After that I will cut out 4 1/2 peices of balsa 1/4 square stock. I will push these peices down the tube to each hole so they are centered and re-drill my holes. All thats left to do after that is glue in the carbon rods to the skid. I think that this will make for some really strong skids that wont break at the joints.

Sounds good

I don't think I'll pay $20 for the aluminium skid. That sounds like a pretty strong setup. Just have to make sure that it's light. Aren't HB skid suppose to be a different length? I have a dragonfly they are the same length.
