What is the deal with these tail rotor motor's??????
This is the second one my machine has eaten.
This time it was the upgraded high authority tail motor. Just when I got this thing flying very reliably. Actually it flew awesome. I have all new components too. Here is the list of new stuff. Maybe some of you experts can figure what in hell is going on with this thing
GWS 4 channel RX
CSM heading Lock
Hs-55 Servos
Orion Micro elite
"High authority tail motor' WITH HEAT SINK!!
Lipo 2 cell Etec

WHO MAKES THE BEST TAIL MOTOR????

I got mine from balsa products it was a GWS unit.

After reading many post I am convinced that the tail motor is by far the week link in this type of helicopter. I am considering mounting a larger yet still smaller tail motor on the carbon shaft close to the main frame. Then fabricating a shaft from it to a 90 degree gear drive to the fixed pitch tail motor. I think the weight gain would be marginal and the performance and reliability would be awesome.
I guess I wouldnt be so mad about this if they sold the motor at Radio Shack. Just a pain to place an order and wait for it to get here.

What speed control are you using on the tail? The ESC's frequency can play a lot in teh longevity of the tail motor.

I have at least 150 flights on a B2C replacement tail motor. And at less than 10 bucks for two, not an expensive proposition either.

You're using the High auth. tail motor with the stock rotor ?
I got a GWS direct drive motor and slapped it on the tail, with a 3x2 prop that comes with it. It works awesome. No more tail authority problems. I did add a little piece of lead to the nose to balance since my Lipo's are so light. But with an astro 010, a few grams of lead is no problem. Try the direct drive. I think you'll find it works better and the motor will last longer. The only detriment is that it looks kind of funny with the little orange 3x2 prop..oh..and it does buzz. But these technicalities are soon forgotten when you're no longer fighting the tail.

Sorry Gents
It turns out that once again I have branded myself an Idiot.
Upon further inspection of my motor I realized that a solder joint had busted on the motor. I found this out after I had taken the motor apart.
IT STILL WORKS! I dremaled the tabs off that hold the back plate on the motor and slide the whole works out. I was pretty shocked at how simple it is. Just 2 small copper tabs holding the brushes. I of course bent these in slightly to ensure a good contact to the armature.
I also cleaned the carbon off of the armature. I put it all back together and it works like a charm. You kind of have to rebrake in the motor to reseat the brushes though. Thanks for all the helpfull replys
