Let me start out by saying I have a new-found respect for those of you who do your own canopy paint jobs...

My question is about orange peal. I am clear coating today and it is coming out pretty good, but I notice that there is slight orange peal from putting on the clear coat so thick. (If I want it to look glossy and wet, and in order to get it to that point, it also will look a little orange pealed). My question is, is this normal? and second, what do you do about it?

I will post a picture of the finished canopies sometime in the next couple days for you all to critisize. Thanks.

You could wet sand it. Oftentimes with auto paint on higher end paint jobs, you wet sand in between color coats to get the orange peel out, and respray another coat. You could sand your clear with really fine paper, then buff it out, or respray a thin coat over your clear if that is compatible.

Start with 1500 grit paper with lots of soap and water and gently sand until you level all of the high spots in the peel. You should see a uniform haze with no shiny pits. Follow up with 2000 grit and lots more soap and water. Come in next with 3M swirl remover until you see all of the sand scratches disappear. Finish up with some non abrasive glaze and wax. The final product will be GORGEOUS and well worth the elbow grease. I now don't worry as much about the oragne peel in the clear. You can compound out almost any disaster.

The mark of a true expert painter like Tim Schoonard, Joe, Mort and all of the auto body techs is the ability to build a perfect gloss with a thin coat and no peel.

Cool, thanks guys. That helps me a lot.

How long should I let the clear cure before sanding it with the 2000 grit and rubbing compound?

What kind of clear are you using? What's manufacture name, product name?

As Joe knows it depends on what manufacture that make's it. I got clear here that I can shoot and in 1 1/2 hours I can wet sand it down! If it is a hobby clear that you got from a hobby shop the instructions will be on the can. But from all the automotive clears that I've played with, the instructions are not on the can anymore. You have to get the manufacture spec sheets. And for be off on the mixture, well yes I let it sit over night. But I assume you where careful when you mixed it. So who makes the clear you used?

Thanx!

Mort, I am not sure what brand it is. I am at work and I will check when I get home. I got it at an autobody shop and it is one you mix with hardener.
