I am no expert, so take what I tell everyone with a grain of salt but this is working very well for me. Seems that every main gear I purchase (MS Type) is warped, some really really bad. Here is what I am doing to harden and straighten them:
1. Place a microwave safe pan in the microwave and heat some water (couple of cups should do) for about 5 minutes, just before boiling.
2. After it gets nice and hot place the gear flat in the bottom of the hot water filled pan.
3. Let it sit there for about 20 minute, but make sure it stays nice and warm.
4. Before taking it out prepare a serving plate and fill it up like a shallow bowl with cold water. This is hard to explain, but I use a smooth bottom plate and add about 2mm of cold water to it. Just enough to cover the height of the gear, but not necessarily the conical section.
5. Take the gear out of the hot water with a fork and place it in the cold water filled plate.
6. Take 2 unopened soda cans. Place the first one over the gear, centered. Then place the second can on top of the first can for more weight.
7. I let mine sit like this overnight and so far it has really improved how the gears spin up.

Once again, this is just my opinion and may have been written a hundred times. I have just never seen it so I wanted people to know a littler trick that is helping correct the tail wags as well as saving me from going mad everytime I pay hard earned money for a new warped gear.

Regards and good luck.
