Update

Re: mower. I went back this morning and jumped the mower. I got it running and mowed the field. Pretty windy there right now.

Tables. I have no idea if they are treated or even painted, but that seems like a reasonable price. We could slap a few coats of latex redwood stain on them if they are unpainted.

High drama at the field!!

Well, I went to the nicely mowed (Thanks, Rick! You're welcome.)field for a little fun. I shoulda stayed home. Charged up the batteries and checked the Cessna. All good. But after a nice takeoff and a couple of circuits something went haywire and before you can say "Orange county Rotors and Planks (OCRAP)" my Cessna was balsa flakes. Oh well...

On to the new P 51, ready to maiden. Range check, start up and taxi went well. She took off and was flying nicely, but issues developed with the motor (ie: the prop came off) and I was a glider. I could have done better with the deadstick. Long and short of it I got her back with minimal damages. Found the prop, spinner, propwasher and nut, but the thrust washer was lost.

Too bad nobody else showed up, it turned sunny and warm without too much wind, and what there was was right down the runway.

(Thanks, Rick! You're welcome.)

Thanks rick! I take it the tractor started ok? Bummer about the cessna. Would you like some milk for your balsa flakes cereal? What happened? Didn't you have an issue with the control servos last year?

lets get two of the tables, and some stain for them. Who can get rid of the existing tables? do we need a new battery or anything for the mower?

Sorry about the cessna flakes Rick, better luck next time.

Re the Cessna, unable to determine a cause. It was fine until it wasn't fine and then it was dust. Thanks for your sympathies.

Re the mower, I had to use my jeep to jump start it, and it was STILL reluctant, but once it was running there were no issues. I think a new battery would be helpful, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that there may be other issues, possibly the starter.

re the tables, I am willing to meet someone to pick them up. Keith, did you say they are assembled? If so, will 2 fit in a pickup? I could bring my flatbed trailer. And where? Which Lowes? LMK.

i cam meet you guys there and pay for the stuff or just get the money back to you from our club account. Lets just get a new battery for the tractor, couldnt hurt. and if the tables are not treated lumber we should stain them with something to help them last a little longer.

Make sure you get all the pieces...

Sounds like a plan, Mike. Somebody should pull the battery out of the tractor so we get the right one and also have an old one to trade in. Also, Darryl said he was going to buy new blades. HEY DARRYL!!! What's the story there?

This weekend...

IF it stays dry, I will try to get the runway mowed after work tonight. I don't know if I'll have time to get out this weekend even if the rain holds off. Weatherman says saturday better then sunday, but you know what his guess is worth.

I'll consider pulling the battery out of the mower and picking up a new one. Also might fill the gas cans. Anybody (Keith??) got news on the new tables?

Darryl? You have any news on the blades? Or should we just use the ones we got? They get sharpened automatically (on the rocks and dirt) every time I mow and seem to do the job just fine.

I went out to the field this evening to look things over. The grass was not TOO high. Did anybody mow since I did it last friday? At any rate, I tried to start the mower, but the weak battery combined with reluctance to fire/run, I was unsuccessful. If by chance the weather is decent tomorrow, the field IS flyable, but we will need to do something about the mower. Darryl, can you handle a tune up? Or do we need to take it to somebody?

Field update

I spent most of the day at the field today. Primary mission: mow the runway.

Mission accomplished. However, the mower wouldn't start untill I changed the spark plug. After that, it seemed to be better. Knock on wood.

The CUT is terrible. New blade would be a help, or a sharpening/balancing of the blades we have, but I think more then anything the mower deck needs to be leveled. It cuts low on the right side and high on the left side. Who knows how this can be done? Who will help me do it?

On another note, the breeze was right down the runway and I had excellent flights with my new P 51 yellowplane! She flies sweet, and it is so awesome to see the wheels tuck up and away on a flyby!

Sorry Rick, I could not help out due to my little sisters comfirmation/party. I did get your message but not untill later in the day, cell phone was left at home, DOH ! Anyway the latest on the blades is I have had no luck but I am sure I can get them at M&D Mower and had all intentions on doing so on Saturday but when I went there they were closed. I will call them on Monday to make sure they have them and if they do I will have one of our drivers pick them up for me.

Thank you for mowing

Tuning the mower: Changing the oil we did, Changing the Spark Plug you did and there is no points/condenser as it is electronic ignition so the only thing left to do is clean/replace the air filter. The only other thing I would consider doing and only if it absolutely needs to be done is remove and clean the carb.

Cleaning the carb would be a good opportunity to install a nitrous system on that old mostly reliable mower

I ended up going with a Mini-Titan for a heli and put a metal head block on it, very nice little heli and went together real easy. Got the kit on Friday, assembled it Friday night, got the batteries on Saturday, borrowed a rate gyro from Ollie on Sunday until I get a new one(thanks Ollie!) and got 3 flights in at our warehouse on Sunday.

It could use a new air filter. I had it out and cleaned the enclosure a bit. The filter is a large automotive type, but not round. Rather is it oblong. Probably should take it into the place with you to get the right replacement. We'll just have to see if the new plug makes the difference when it comes to starting up. My read on what was happening is that the old plug was too weak to fire under choke (wet). It would then TRY to start on low throttle (less gas) but there wasn't enough mixture there to get it running. After I put the new plug in, it fired normally (choked) and ran once I dropped the throttle into the RUN position. Assuming the starting problem is cured (knock on wood) we really need to level the deck. I had a lot of trouble taxiing the 51 on the freshly mowed lawn, even tho the wheels are way out in front of the wing. But it sure flew great!

Oh yeah, I filled the gas cans-$17.75!!!! I don't think there is any need to mess with the carb as once the mower is running, it runs fine.

Blades

will have to be removed and matched at the mower shop. We might as well find someone over there in Walden to sharpen them or find some place there to buy them. Any suggestions ??

We need to remove the blades. Will you meet me at the field to do the job? Any evening after work. We can decide what to do with the blades after we pull them-ie: sharpen, have sharpened, or replace. Bring a few heavy files or a grinder, we can sharpen them up easily enough. Maybe we can also figure out how to level the mowing deck. That is very important. The cut is visibly off level.
