My first was a GMP Cricket sized, Hughes 300, OS28 pwr, no gyro, fixed pitch. Robert Gorham used to fly in this area and I asked him to make sure that it flew, when I knew that it could, I fought with it, broke it, backed it into the curb (don't remember how many times!) finally got it to hover into the wind, and felt like I could really do something.

My first voter was a GMP cricket back in 1982. No gyro, Kraft radio with an os 25 in it. Crashed it alot even into the car. Finally learned to hover it. Then bought a GMP competitor kit from Robert Gorman in about 1983. Actually flew that one around. But ran out of money and only been flying airplanes till last year. Up to 5 choppers now.

I never really had much luck with it (about 1981). I could never get the friction belt drive to hold long enough to be effective with the tail rotor. After that, I finally had good luck with the original Hirobo Shuttle.

Hi SBOTI,

The most common model called a Cobra back in the 80's and early 90's was made by GMP (Gorham Model Products). The company was located in southern California and they made the frame components but all of the main flight components like the rotor hub, tail rotor, and swashplate control systems were Hirobo.

GMP went out of business in the early 90's if I'm remembering correctly.

Sound right to you?

Intrepid175,

Hi and thanks for the reply. Yes, now that you mentioned it, I do remember GMP on some of the stuff I got with it. Sure was a big heavy beast too. Well, that does help a lot and I really appriciate the trip down memory lane! Have a good one and keep the spinning parts out of the dirt.

I was one of those lucky GMP Cricket fixed pitch learners also.OS 28 with a old futaba gyro. But I did learn to fly with it and it made allot of flights with only one set of broken blades and a tail boom.I then bought a early Kalt Enforcer and flew it allot. One day I decided to take the Cricket back out.Wow what a scary little machine it had become sitting on the shelf.I had forgotten the fact that all decends ect had to have a plan of putting in the throttle at a given altitude to spool up that rotor head.It was sold shortly after that flight.I sort of miss it now

My First...

I bought my first heli in 1972, the Hegi Cobra fixed pitch. Man, were things different then! Heavy birds; no gyro; no heli radios; no collective pitch; not much of anything, other than the determination to try! Since then, have built or flown just about all of 'em. Watching the technology change and grow over the years has kinda been like watching a child grow up.

My first Heli.

American RC Helicopter Revolution.
40 size, teetering head, fixed pitch and it flew, sort-of!

American RC Helicopter came out with the commander and I suddenly could fly quite well. Go figure. I learned nose-in, loops and rolls and autorotation with the commander.

I sold it in the early '80's and have not flown much untill I got my Blade CP about 6 months ago, Now I fly the T-Rex SE. Nice helicopter.
