I flew a Heli-Baby a long long long time ago then I got a Heli-Boy. I also flew a friend's Mantis (the one with the wooden frames). Then I stopped flying helis altogether and only flew Airplanes for years until about 7 months ago that my wife got me a Vigor. I still have a Heli-Boy and I'm planning on flying it soon.

All I can say is that comparing flying helis when I started flying Helis without gyros or any of the advances that we have today to flying today's helis is like two completely different hobbies. If you don't believe me take the Gyro off, fix your pitch and put an engine that's half the size of the one you currently use and you'll understand very quickly what I mean.

First Heli

Shuttle - Original Blue ARF with OS28 motor..
Would boom strike if you looked at it funny..
Spent over $3000 on repairs on the heli..
No help... but plenty of determination...
Funny thing.. I still fly lousy.. and that was in 1985

Then Concept 30 DX, GMP Cobra, GMP Competitor..
Then I got out of the Hobby until Xmas of last year..
Have not looked back...

First Heli

My first heli was a Hughes 300 GMP 25 size with a Como 40 in it. That was back in 84, but unfortunatly went fixed wing shortly afterwards. It was just simply easier. Just took it back up this year. Still have the heli but I need a canopy. If you have one or need parts to restore yours let me know!

A Dubro Huges 300 converted to a Shark. 1973. Fixed pitch, large metal paddles, a gas engine converted to glo that seized up every couple of gallons. There were no radios with mixing, no gyros, but lots of fun.

I started on a GMP Cobra back in 1986, never got much past hovering in 2 years of trying, there was nobody around me flying helis, so I gave it up . Got back into it 4 years ago, still have a fleet of GMP's,( Cobra, King Cobra, Competitor, and 2 un-built Legends), a couple PHi's,(Tornado and Hurricane 3D), and my Bergen Intrepid 60, my favorite heli.....Coop

My first heli.. the good ol' days

My first heli was a Ergo .30. After having a lot of experience flying different helis I look back and I really like the Ergo. Cyclic response is very smooth and hovering it seems like a piece of cake compared to my whipper snapper Rappy. It seems to track better in forward flight than the Rappy as well. I loved that thing, now parts of it are in Florida, California and Texas. I parted her out for some new stuff, but I know that others are getting better use out the parts than I was since all it was doing was sitting in my garage gathering dust. I wonder if it had heli envy when it was sitting next to my heavily used Raptor. I wonder what conversations they would've had if they could talk.Heh I certainly will miss that heli!

Kyosho EP

I started with electric seeing as I already had all the gubbins for the many planks I have!

I lost count of the number of silly foam blades and aluminium booms I replaced before (and after to some extent) I learned to fly the thing but learn to fly it I did - now looking to upgrade the power train to brushless using a Hacker/Shultz combination.

I actually got one of those HyperFly's a few years ago when they first came out, but I don't think they count - do they??

I still have the EP and have dressed it in the Hughes 500 body shell now, love flying it around knowing that it'll never go 'dead stick' !!

Got the ECO at the end of last year, but never really got to grips with it and now have a few gassers, Concept Bell 222, Futura SE, and Graupner Heim Jet Ranger, and Nexus Bell 222 (still under construction).

first heli was an Ergo 30. Terrific machine, took a beating and kept flying great. In fact, I liked it so much that I decided to build another one as a 50. With long boom, 600mm NHPs and OS 50, that ship rocks!

Here's a pic of the old 30

DuBro Hughes 300

I, too, go back to 1973 to recall my first heli. The Hughes 300 by DuBro. It shook so bad, I tethered it to the ground using training gear. Never did get beyond occasional hover with it. Finally sold it to a guy who also had one. He used mine for parts. I went back to planks and gliders for years and finaly got back into helis in 1994 with an X-Cell 30. It's still flying. A converted plank flyer bought it from me 4 years ago.

First Heli????

So far pretty interesting, not surprising no one started with a 60. I wonder if that's because 60's were too expensive when you crash? You would use too much fuel? Is there anyone who started with a 60? ---------BladeRunner

first heli a 60

well my second heli is a 60 . after the LMH.
so some ppl saying that it's my first heli or first collective machine.
this pic was taked today cpl houres ago. My first flight on it

yeah cost scared me - that why i got Freya and not Xcell for example.
About Fuel ...yep today i realize how bad it is. I burn in one day almost a galon of CP30% ..not cheap. But i dont have any regrets.
I like it big , soooo stable(after LMH )the sound of the big blades ...ha....pure FUN !

After comfortably flying the aerofly sim I went to a Hirobo fun fly and told myself if i can fly a real one ill buy one today. They had a shuttle Challenge on a buddy box that was set up real sluggish. I had no problem flying it. so i bought one. After breaking various parts on the head and the tail and waiting forever for parts, i put $500 in metal on the tail and the head. This was before the Raptor came out otherwise i would have bought it instead of upgrading. I keep the shuttle arround to calm my nerves after crashing the raptor 30.

I started with an original Kalt Cyclone. It had the flat belt for the tail drive that would barely pull the tail at hover pitch, if you gave it right rudder in a hover or tried to climb using revo the increased pitch would cause the tail drive to slip and the t/r to slow dramatically causing a hard left pirouette instead!!! It had a Webra .50 with a Heli-Ball muffler, boy were they loud! I had it for a couple of years and learned nose-in, FF, and loops with it. However it would not do a roll so I traded it in for a (then new) X-Cell .60. Wow what a difference there was!

Steve

BTW it was a belt start, remember those? If you didn't stow the starting belt just right before flying, it could get caught on the clutch and stall the engine in mid-flight!
