Antiques or Out of Business > What was your first RC Heli??

My first heli was a Kalt Baron 50. Cost me $900 in parts to teach myself how to fly it. No sims back then. Next I found a blue Shuttle at a garage sale for $90. It was very easy to fly compared to the underpowered Kalt. I lost it due to a radio problem, and purchased a brand new Concept 30 which I still have and is actually airworthy. It's the one on the far right in the photo of my heli rack in my gallery.

Here was my first love a Schluter miniboy. Mechanical mixing on the tail and I flew it with a single stick proline radio. I wish I still had that bird....

I understand that. I've always wanted to find a Horizon, new in the box to build and fly today. I always thought it wasn't that bad a machine to learn to hover on but I'd really like to try one again, now that I know how to fly!

My first helicopter was an american revolution back in the early 80s. But the second helicopter which I owned and learned the most on was the hirobo shuttle which is a great helicopter Jimmi

I had a Baron 28 with an OS 32 cone start because that belt was a pain in the neck. Not to mention the starters with pullies on them cost more! This was back in the late 80's early 90's we would get together at a high school called Vo-Tech. I grew up flying with guys like Chip Hyde back when he was with JR. In fact I remember being out one morning hovering like always, Chip had a van with JR logos all over it but he was flying TSK's at the time. His collective went out on him and the heli dropped from like 6 ft, climbed back up, dropped and hit the ground again and was crunched. He walked over to his van, threw the broken machine in the back and pulled out a new one and continued flying. We gave him lots of grief about that but he's good for it. I haven't seen those guys in years but I'm finally get back in town. The Enforcer was the machine that really taught me the most. It flew differently everyday and was so nice to start with the convenient cone starter coming up thru the canopy! You had to have a remote glow plug or a 9" glow driver. Those were fun times..

I just got a Revolution 40 kit, new in the box from a friend who's father passed away and left it behind.

The engine was missing from the kit though I've already aquired a K&B 40 is reasonably good shape from someone on Ebay.

I was reading the building instructions and I thought it was unbelievable that they wanted you to hold the tail boom and bring the power up to a hover 2 feet off the ground to trim it out and get the engine adjusted properly. Way to scarey for me.

I never tried that trick. I got mine to hover but the tail was hard to keep under control in those days.

I had a couple of Dubro Helis before my Revolution 40. The Revolution is the one I really learned to fly with. The loss of the K&B 40 is really no loss as the engine was so non-linear in throttle response it made the bird harder to fly. I used an OS40 and after trimming it flew fine. If you have the original blade holder you need two wrenches to bend it and set the tracking. Far cry from today

My first heli was a Kyosho Concept 30 DX. It went though several crashes and rebuilds. This was in the late 80's. It had a OS motor and a Gyro. I used Futaba radio equipment then and still use Futaba equipment to this day. I have sold it and moved on to bigger and better Helis. If there had only been simulators then.

MFA Sport 500

Now back into choppers, 20 years later, I have a MFA Sport 500 with Hughes 500 fuse...

I had an old Airwolf when I was a kid (13), don't remember many of the details, had it for all of 30 seconds of flight, and crashed into the pond, where it sank like a rock some 20 odd feet to a mud bottom...
