Antiques or Out of Business > What was your first RC Heli??

My first heli was a used Kalt Baron 30 with a Webra .28/HeliBall muffler that I bought from the LHS in '88 or '89. It being the first and only rc heli I'd ever seen, and it was for sale, I had to have it. 4 Channel and no gyro as I recall. pretty sure it was fixed pitch. I was pretty clueless about it and didn't get far with it. Sold it in early '90s in favor of a ShuttleZX.

Even on the ZX I used a basic no-mix radio, so I had both the pitch and throttle sharing the same servo. At least it had a gyro, a futaba 153.

What a difference helis are today.

1985, Micromold 'Lark' , fixed pitch, wood, alu and plastic,No ball bearings, 4 servos, no gyro, OS 25, and it did fly circuits like a plane, Radio Robbe 'Promars' mix, 6 channel with a simple mix option.
The first 10 minutes, it shook itself to bits on the ground, i didn't know what 'Blade balancing' and 'Tracking' was all about.

35 of modelling planes helis etc i live in the south of France

Ahh! The Lark! One of these was my second heli - my wife bought it me for Christmas in 1974, and it is still flying, though now in the later "Linnet" fuselage.

I also now own an original Mk1, complete with HB 25:

though this is now more usually flown by my son, the British F3C Champ:

My own Lark flies using the original D&R "Bantam" servos from the early 70's (still giving reliable service!), and the radio gear is home made operating on 459 MHz (legal here in the UK).

I've also recently acquired a Schluter DS-22, which following a major mechanical overhaul, is now flying nicely too!

There is a video of this in action available at www.schlueter-cobra.de/update.html

The site is in German, but you should be able to find it! Be warned - the full video is 30 MB!

Mine was an MXA as well. After months of tweeking, filing and bodging, and crashing, it flew pretty well. Then some ******* nicked it out of my car. Replaced it with a Schluter Junior 50. That was a brilliant model. Still get it out from time to time.

Whirlybirds DO fly :-)

Please look down through my gallery.

But any wind at all will render the heli uncontrollable. Indoors or dead-calm conditions make for a very relaxing flight.

So many heli's - too little time...

My "first" was a GMP Cricket, but I actually learned to fly with a Kyosho Concept 30. I still have the Concept along with a Nexus Standard with scale glass fuse and a Nexus 46. Haven't flown any of them in many years, but will soon be getting back into it with a small EP. IF I can find time between all of my other hobbies and projects.

PS - Heli Headcase...give me a call sometime!

Schluter Helibaby circa 1977. Webra .40, CANS(instead of flybar paddles increased response time from 5 seconds to 2 seconds before any thing happened! Gyro? Balancing? Nope! Made my own blades, main and tail out of balsa covered with trim monokote. I managed to hover this machine for a total of about 30 seconds. Like trying to balance one basketball on top of another with a transmitter with one eye closed. Oh yes, did I mention that the main rotor pitch was set by using two adjustable wrenches on the strip metal main blade holders and twisting in opposite directions ?? SWAG (Scientific Wild Ass Guess) theory applied. It was started with a belt that you had to "form" from a straight piece of round plastic belting. After threading it through the frame around the flywheel, you had to melt the ends and press the ends together while still molten and hold it until it cooled then trim off the slag! Ah, the German engineers!
