My first Heli

My first model was a Micromold Lark 2-25
Closely followed by one of the first collective pitch Schluter Heli-boys in the UK. I didn't have much luck as the Lark is/was fixed pitch and the Heli-boy flew on four channel radio with mechanically mixed tail, engine and collective pitch. It was bought from Dave Nieman models and The first time I flew it, I broke it. Somebody told me that helis flew just like fixed wing in the circuit. So I just opened the tap and went for it. After a couple of minutes I realised I probably was going to wreck it on landing so I might as well enjoy myself while it lasted. I think I did several loops and tried to roll it. It got busted on the landing. It never flew again but I wish I'd kept it.

Hi lort, my first was a Schluter "Heli~Baby". Mine also had no gyro and was fixed main pitch!! Always up & down like a yo-yo.....the Heli Boy had to be much better with collective pitch.....
BTW, there is a pic of mine in my gallery....

Anybody heard of the DuBro Tri-Star 40? That was my first heli, late 1975....That's when I learned not to get your transmitter antenna caught in the spinning rotor blades! They tend to truncate things that get in their way.

tri-star 40

Hi Larrry. I remember it was called the tri-star because there were three fuselages available. There was the stock one that I had, I think there was a Hughes...but I can't remember what the other fuse was...do you?

Not much of a heli, but it managed to teach me to keep my fingers out of the prop. Got a Schluter Heliboy after that. Way better machine.

My first heli was a Raptor 60. But I bought a Raptor 30 a couple of weeks before the 60 arrived.

I lost my infamous tag line.

G'day from Oz, land of.
My first heli was a Graupner Bell 47G, bought around 79-80. Came with a HB 25 (not to be confused with HP motors). Used a 4 channel plane radio. Was fixed pitch. Best was a few hovering efforts. Would love to have a go at one with what I know now.
First REAL chopper was a Hirobo Falcon Mk1. Had a Futaba heli radio, gyro, the 154BB, and a O40H, soon uprated to the 45H. Sure had a lot of fun with that heli. Have enough bits from left over to resurrect a pretty close copy of this machine, one day.

Current helis will be obsolete someday too...I wonder what technology we'll have in 5 years.....maybe turbines at nitro prices.

-I got an RC plane (trainer)....
-Then got a freeware simulator.... learned to fly.
-The Sim also has helis - and I learned to hover them pretty good.
-So, I then decided to build a heli - FROM SCRATCH!!!!
-YES!, it flew OK, even if I didn't.

It is still in the box I left it in, it needs a new mainshaft. Since I have to MAKE the parts for it, it takes me a long while to get it flying after a mishap :-) I eventually got an ECO8 so I could get more flying time.

See my website for pictures of it and more details.

(It's a CCPM, 7-8 cell Electric heli made of G-10 and carbon, belt drive tail, all machined parts except for the Raptor main blade grips, uses an RC car motor just fine)

Now, I just have time to keep my fleet flying as it is.

had a GMP cricket, os 28 engine, conquest 6 ch am radio, gmp gyro, got it off the ground once for a short hover in late 80's, my mind was made up to give it up, then seen a kyosho concept 30 DX model, arf, threw all equipment in there with training gear, taught myself how to hover in the backyard in 3 months, and wow, these things really do fly....current owner of venture and quick 30, quick has diesel head conversion

Kalt Baron 50 with an OS 50 (the old one) and a mechanical Gyro back in the late 1980s. Just learned to hover with it and not much more.

Light travels faster than sound, thats why some people appear so bright UNTIL you hear them speak.
