Antiques or Out of Business > What was your first RC Heli??

Just curious, what was the first heli that you owned? My first was a Schluter Heli-Baby, it had a fixed pitch main rotor and only needed 4 servos-no gyro. It was kind of like trying to keep a yo-yo at mid point on the string! I used a GI Joe in an orange jump suit for balance, he was a perfect fit! I think the engine was an Enya 35-but not sure, that was back in the early 70's!
-----BladeRunner. Thanks Mark for inserting this pic.

First Helicopter

My first Helicopter was a Kalt enforcer. It taught me to learn to fly and both of my boys. It was sold without a crash on it. The new owner had it for 2 day before it life came to an end.

Kyosho Concept 30 SE

That machine and my 5 channel Futaba Heli radio. She had an OS 30 with a pretty heli-ball muffler. I just got her to hover and then had to move. Then she sat for a year and I sold it. 10 years later I got me a Raptor and havn't looked back.

Kyosho Nexus 30

In December 2000, I got my first heli: the Nexus 30. After nearly 8 months of constant flying and one crash, the bird [in flying condition] was sold to be replaced with a Freya. I had to sell Nexus or do something... I never flew it after flying the Freya.

My first was an old Alouette (not sure on spelling of it) Fixed pitch. I was messing around with it on a normal sunday fun fly (my first at flying though) and I finally got it to hover and not chase me too much!! A local heli guy (Billy Pearce) came over to watch me. As is the norm, a gust of wind caught me off guard and I added Colletive and flew it away about 100 yards and then back at (Both of) us nose in!!! I flaired back (downwind of course ) and let it settle into the grass. Didn't do too much damage but I vaugly remember throwing it away long ago..yep TRASHED it.
Got a Baron 28 used and only crashed it once into my kids swingset. Never got to FF again before I quit hobby in 1979.

My first heli was a Hirobo Shuttle. The old one with the baby blue canopy. I never got it off the ground. I would strap it to a lazy susan and fire it up. The main goal was to get good at controlling the tail before it got off the ground. There were no HH gyros at that time. We used the old mechanical ones. I traded it for a set of Taylor Made golf clubs. The first one I actually flew was a Concept 30 DX. Hovered on the second tank. I remember having to stop and relax because of all the concentration it took to get it in the air. BTW, the Concept was given to me by a very good friend and mentor just before he died of cancer. I think he would be pleased to see me buzzing around the sky with my Raptor. This is a great hobby.

Concept 30 DX/SE

It was one of the first production Concepts in the US. It was sold as a DX but came with some of the SE bearings. The drive gear/clutch bell did not have any bearings at all. I still have the heli with the original OS engine. I dust it off ever year or so and enjoy a day of lazy flying.

Baron 28 w/Webra 28

Bought it with a 4 channel Futaba FG AM in '86. Learned to hover using mechanical throttle mixing and using G153 single rate gyro. I put sticks on it and got it figured out during winter on an icy parking lot. Engine was a jewel and still have it. Although belt starting was a pain. Helo-Ball was sure wierd looking. I got a 5NLH radio and had much more fun. Mechanical mixing really sucked! A Concept SX followed that, and managed to start looping and rolling it by the end of the first gallon (even after learning to fly it with the tail control reversed!) I had a boom stike trying to do autos with it, bought all the parts and they sat there for 4 years. Got it back together and flying, then sold it last fall. Bought and started flying a Raptor with modern gear right after that. I'm a junkie again.

Eco8

I started 10/2000 with a Eco 8 on 10 cells. I learned to hover in my garage over the winter. In the spring of this year I was looping and rolling.

I was told later that electrics don't fly well and are not a good learning tool.. I didn't know the difference, so I guess I proved them wrong :-)

I picked up a GPH in May. Now I know what people are talking about. Much easier to fly! I ended up going to the NATS with it where I meet alan szabo kids. Man can they fly!

First Heli

I just started last year so mine is probably not too impressive. It was a used Century that had been upgraded to all Shuttle parts but was a real bear to work on ... but I learned. This old web page has a pic... haha look at that canopy...
