I am thinking about getting a Schweizer 300 with the CP upgrade. How many channel reciever will it require? and how does this heli flies? I want something to play around with indoors. does it fly stable if I want to just hover it? I want to do 3D in it also but would like to be able to hover it stable if I want to play with it in my office!! any info is appreciated.

Nobody on this board owns a Schweizer 300?

You need at least a 5 channel radio. It's ccpm so there's 3 for the main rotor, 1 for the t/r and 1 for the motor. Since most radios transmit the pitch info on channel 6 most 5 channel rx won't work, ie the hitec 555. Berg makes a 5 channel rx that receives 1-4 & 6. I use the Hitec electron 6 cuz it's a light weight dual conversion rx. (Since the rx is close to the esc and motor there's a high level of interference.)

I've flown my Schweizer in rooms smaller than 10x10. You can't do much more than hover but it's fine in small spaces.

The only thing I don't like about it is the tail is a bitch to get right and is very fragile. I've had great flights where the tail was rock solid. I've then landed to change batteries and had it pirouette out of control as soon as I broke ground.

I now have the microheli al tail case and helihobby al t/r bell crank which I hope will help with this.

Hope this helps`

Just got one

I am just getting through about my 4th week after purchase of my hornet and still haven't really flown it that well. I can tell you some of my experiences, stuff that I have learned that I would have done differently. I got a package deal from heliproz that came with a the ms gyro, battery, charger, kit, esc, motor for 400. I prob should have gotten a combo from helihobby because the non heading hold gyro is a pain to setup on such a figity helicopter, therefore I ended up buying a 240 gyro. I didn't need the charger either cause I have a triton. My first failure was (actually theres been about 4 or 5 so I don't know the order) were the tail gears. I didn't know they were so sensitive and when I was installing, I had to briefly remove them and I gues I put excessive force on them because I destroyed teeth. When I tried to fly it would skip and make the tail die at higher pitches. This cause the conical pinion and the motor pinion to strip. So I order a titanium tail shaft, and speed up gears as well as the bearings for the speedup gears and I replacement bearing for a crappy bearing from the kit. It worked for a little before it started skipping again. I believe the culprit for this new skippage, we first from one of the gears getting stripped. I had used a 16 and 18 gear combo and I find that the gear notches on the 16 or so small and delicate that it doesnt take much to strip them. That what a probably loose mesh, it began to skip and stripped. Well then I just ordered the stock tail gears because they are 1/4 the price so I did the mod where you cut off the larger section of the gear so they run truer. Well this worked for the tail. Except the gyro was setup crappy and it went wild all of sudden and I ended up crashing. The damage was only a small crack in the main blades which I prob will just tape (but ordered new ones in case) and a broken blade grip and lost bolt. So in frustration I just ordered a 240 gyro new blade grip and new blades. I also got a 9 tooth metal pinion for the tail (I find the stock black 180 tooth gear to be pretty strong so far and the pinions much weaker of links). Hopefully with this new delivery I can get some of my moneys worth out of this thing. Oh, I also bought a carbon servo plate because the stock setup didn't seem too good.

Other setup errors that I would recommend not making unless you want to go through some of what I did. If you have any metal servo linkages lieing around, replace the stock tail servo control rod with something that is adjustable. Make sure you don't screw in the grub screws too tight on the carbon tail or it will crack. Make sure you put grease in on the threads of the screws that the tail blades screw in with, this will help the tail not wag as much. Make sure there is no slop anywhere in the tail setup. Also grease all the gears and moving parts. Oil the bearings. Don't forget to run in your stock motor. I can't really think of anything else right now.

I don't know what equiptment you already have but if I were to buy agian from the start

helicopter34 - how on earth did you strip the tail gears??? I crashed my Hornet, had the tail rotor stuck in objects etc.. never stripped them (stock gears). I only got CA between the teeth which cleaned up nicely with the tip of a #11 blade. I did strip main and tail pinions until I went conical.
The stock CSM is a POS. I learned if fast enough to get a GY240 before any major damage...
Andy, I feel that the CP is much easier to hover due to the higher rotor RPM. I had FP and after going CP, I never looked back. I made a 120 degree servo plate from an old CD and the cyclic and collective response is great. The tail is still somewhat sensitive and the excessive gyro corrections sometimes make the heli suddenly go up and down. I hope that the Razor+phoenix w/governor will solve that as well.
I followed an advice I read to tighten the tail blades so they cannot move and then to adjust their angle until vibrations are minimized. It does help.
The next item in the never ending shopping list is an aftermarket pitch slider. The one that came with the CP kit is so crappy it can go from zero pitch to almost 45 degree with out the servo moving. This slop requires extensive gyro correction which result in erratic behaviour.

No

I got a 9 tooth pinion to increase tail rpm. It fits great and runs really smooth.

Luck

I guess the only thing that I have had good luck with on a helicopter that I have had nothing but bad luck is the tail pitch slider. I think because the parts are so small its almost like a crap shoot whether it will set in how its suppose to. My pitch slider is pretty solid, no slop.

So will you sell it?
I think I need to spend some time with the pitch slider. The one thing that worries me is I might ruin it for good. This means no midnight hovering in the living room for at least a week.
All in all, the machine is quite solid. I can hover for 15 minutes on Etec 3S with brushed Speed300 (letting it cool down from time to time). Other than an erratic tail (a combination of some vibrations from the mains and the pitch slider slop) it flies really nice for a midget. That said, it took it's time. The process of getting this thing to work smooth is a very satisfying process (if you are successful). Other than a pair of new deralin tail gears (I got them free a month ago - stock gears were OK) the entire heli is stock with home made upgrades. These include 4 bearing tail boom, tail boom anty strike shield (proved useful a dozen times), ball in bellcrank, 120 degree servo plate and steel pin for the antirotation arm. I also have a 2mm drill bit instead of the tail shaft.
Convenience wise - I installed allen headless screws to hold down the boom to the mast and tail gear box.

Thank you for your inputs. After reading throught this thread I will not buy the complete package. I will use a GY240 and probably go with CP upgrade. Thanks again
