Engines Plugs Mufflers Fuel > Spring wire in Thunder Tiger 70 engine?????

Check THIS out! My Thunder Tiger 70 heli engine has be running great for over 50 hours, then today it quit. I pulled the back off the engine and found two pieces of spring steel wire inside - one wrapped around the crankshaft pin. Anyone have an idea as to what it might be? It was not the circlip wire as I first thought. I reassembled the engine and it runs great again - this time without the wires!

It may have been in there all the time. I have been in this hobby for a long time and I make it a practice of checking each new engine I buy for foreign objects. I have found stuff like that in every brand. Also, it could be the remainder of a few of the balls from the rear engine bearing.

Rear Bearing retainer.....

Howdy!!!
Ok.. This is speculation based on my experience, but if I were in your shoes I would check this before I flew again... That wire looks like (to me) it was once part of the retainer in one of your rear main bearing.. You may have taken out the crank and checked your main bearing allready.. If not I would SERUIOUSLY consider doing it.. I don't think that wire was in there all along.. There is a SLIM chance it somehow got sucked in the intake,, though.. Good luck.....

Still Stumped!

That was a great suggestion about it being the rear bearing retainer. I just tore it down again and looked - that wasn't it. The retainer is in perfect condition, and both bearings are smooth as glass and look great. This is a REAL stumper!!!

Both pieces of wire are .016" diameter, 2.25" long, and are spring steel.

How about the carburator throttle body spring? If it cracked it may have been sucked in.

Wrist pin retainers?? I don't see any such thing in the exploded parts diagram for this engine. There is a lot of side-to-side play in the connecting rod at the wrist pin. Are there supposed to be springs keeping it centered on the wrist pin? I don't see such a thing on my YS-STII diagram either....hmmmm.

wrist pin retainers aren't 2.25" long when stretched.

My hunch is just some skerf from machining.

Yes, there is a wrist pin retainer in both engines. One more thing, the second piece of wire is 1.75" long. It almost had to be a carb spring. I just returned from flying the engine for about 40 minutes - it flew great - just like it used to.

WEIRD!!!!
