Lately I've been getting a lot of these type of popups. Is there a simple way to stop them?

You need to disable the messenger service, In Win2000 you go to your control panel -- Administrative Tools --> Computer Management

Once that pops up look down the list on the left hand side you will see "Services and Applications" Click the plus, then select "services". On the right hand side of the screen you will see a list of all services available on your system and wether or not they are running, scroll down the list and look for one called "Messenger".

Double click messenger, a dialog will pop up. Under startup type (probably set for 'automatic') switch it to 'disabled'. Then press the button that says 'stop'. Apply your changes and you should never see those popups again.

I'm not sure of the process in WinXP, but I'm sure there's place to enable/disable services for it

Thanks! It's disabled now. Those instructions worked well for XP too.
