PPM is the correct term for what some people refer to as FM.

you don't HAVE to have PCM, but some people like it!

I have a gas x-cell and a futaba PCM receiver. It works well. But FM (actually PPM) would work equally as well. Technically PCM uses FM too, but I know what you mean.

I'm using 9202 servos on all my controls, except my gyro.

I also have a G501 (not a GY501) gyro and a 9203 servo on the tailrotor. I'm about to switch to a GY401/9253 gyro. The G501 works fine, but is not as accurate as the new heading hold 'GY' series gyros. So I would say to use the G501 until you get familliar with the gasser.

Later, when you are ready for 3D accuracy, get a heading hold gyro such as the GY401 (or GY502 or GY601).

you probably won't have a problem with the FM receiver if you keep all the receiver, servo wiring as far away from the ignition wiring as you can.

Just be safe and do range tests both with and without the engine running. If there is a difference in range with the engine running, find and solve the problem.

I'll second that. If you are buying a new radio, go with PCM.

Also, I'd go with Futaba or JR. Most of the heli's give instructions for one of those brands. Others could be used but there could be differences.

Personally, I like Futaba. You'll get every person's own reason for either brand, so go with the features that you like.

My reason for liking Futaba is that all of their FM receivers (yes, PCM is FM too) are dual conversion. They don't try to give you marketing mumbo jumbo to try to sell you on the virtues of a single conversion receiver. Having some technical knowledge on the subject, I do not want a single conversion receiver in my aircraft, hence I stay away from JR. But JR does make some very nice equipment. Had I not started with Futaba years ago, I may have ended up with JR, but the receiver technology would have been an issue with me as I fly in the north east, there are a lot of radio systems up here and a single conversion receiver provides some extra protection against certain types of interference. If you live in the mid-west, or in a very rural area were there is not a lot of 'radio population/pollution' then this may not be a concern.
