Different?

You seem to be missing some parts (a bar & two paddles)... So, how does it fly?

haha.. got bored today, and replaced the main shaft and head with a Flybarless head.. Just finished a flight with it, flys great! I like it! The flybar'd head was too much for me, I like the feel of the multi's, so this is more normal to me now.

Joe - if you are out there, got 12:30 mins on the 32 cell pack..

Looks better too!

What kind of blades are you using with that head?
Just curious what alternative blades to the VARIOs are available and how they behave ...

For this test, I am just using the stock 800mm Joker blades.. They are right hand rotation though.. I am waiting to get some other blades to try as well

I wonder why many people claim that you should only use balanced and optimized blades for rigid (ok, they might want to sell them, yeah)... others use stock BBT, M-Blades and so on, no woodies of course, and not the lightest blades available (I heard almost every decent blade over 200 g weight each would work), but nevertheless standard blades ...

Any opinions?

I think Heavier and slower is the key for multi's period.. But that is just my experence..

I am getting ~ 12:30 mins on my 30 cell pack as well - Loaded up my Maxi is 12 lbs ready to fly. How much does that Vario weigh? just curious.

I am also going to sling a load, and test the max weight I can haul around too.. should be another 4-6 lbs..

David, What motor, pinion and headspeed are you running?

Uhh

Motor - Good one.. Acro 24-5
Pinion - I am not sure - It is the standard one.. Joe Howard?

Headspeed? Dunno - I do not have anyone that flys with me.. so it is hard to tach - I will know after this weekend - Bham Scale get together.. I am guessing I am running ~ 1100 RPM though.. nice a slow

here are some pics of the head I am using.. http://www.mcgirt.net/RC/Maxi-Joker...lybarless-pics/

The Maxi has a standard 20 tooth pinion. Top rpm on the head is 1200.
This head is so responsive that i am flying mine at 1100, and you would never know it.

That would certainly make sense... A flybarless, or multi bladed head for that matter, only has Bell input so it is going to be fast... You will however, find that it will bring out the weakness in your servos if you have any...

I'm sure that you two have quite good servos on your machines so all should be fine...

I look forward to seeing many Jokers at IRCHA this year...

@dmcgirt:

Posted that one in anotner thread already:

VARIO Silence, .60 size electric, close relative to the VARIO SkyFox.

The motor is a Kontronik Tango 45-04 brushless
the electronic speed controller is a Kontronik BEAT 30-8-30,
the electrons are temporarily stored in packs of 30 cells in-line of RC-2000 and RC-2400 Sanyo NiCDs

Weight with the heavier 2400s is 4630 grams, with the lighter 2000s 4540 grams.

Flight time up to 12:15 mins (was my longest continuous flight, from starting the motor (some 15-20 secs to reach takeoff-rpm) to switching off), usually something between 10 and 11 mins. The batteries are used very well, only about 1.5-2 % of capacity remain after flights.

Blades are std. VARIO 680s asym

Also fly it in a Hughes 500 D fuse, then weight is approx. 5.4 to 5.5 kg

Thanks Eddi,

This brings up a good point, how does one measure the flight time of an electric...

I guess I mean, is their a standard? Like you stated, from power up, to spool down?

I had been only measuring time in the air, so from Liftoff, to landing. Thus not counting spool up, and the 1-2 mins of spool down ( draining what is left of the battery down..)

Is there a standard practice to measure?

I'd say ... depends. I have a stopwatch taped to my tx, which I switch on when spooling up and off when switching off. Just to compare flight-times for myself and to have some clue when to come back in for some final hovering before the power drops.

I usually don't empty my packs in the heli after landing but on the (dis-)charger (down to 0.8 V/cell) to see what's left in them.

I know of newer tx that have a timer built-in, whicht measure flight time eg when the throttle/pitch stick crosses a preset position (what do the 3Ds do with such a setup?).

I "trigger" the timer on my 10X when I start the spool-up (it's drawing current at that point) and click it off when I set it down at the end of the flight...

It probably draws more amps when spooling up than nearly any time in the flight...

Hehe, let's start a poll:

2 spool-up : 1 lift-off
