Hi all, and thanks for the great site. First post, so here goes. I have stumbled into an old Baron 28 with an OS28. I have a Futaba Conquest 6 channel FM radio setup, and a pile of S148s. I have flown airplanes and mostly gliders, so I have the peripheral gear to start and run the engine, but I don't know much about the heli. I have never flown heli's before, and was wondering if this bird might be too old or not suitable. The Baron is still in never built kit form, with the unrun OS. A couple of idiot questions... I feel like I can build this heli, as I am mechanically capable, and have built RC cars, planes, and done all kinds of mechanical work. Anything to watch out for? Is this a collective pitch machine? I had heard you could use an airplane radio for a non collective heli, but not sure. Is it reccomended to go drop a load of money right away on a heli radio? I don't really have the money, but it seems like I have most of the pieces needed. I also have a sim, so I want to learn to fly that first. Does anybody have any information on the old Baron? I can't seem to find much. Any help would be most appreciated, as well as advice. I am willing to spend some cash, but only what I need to (like for a gyro) if I can utilize what I have. Otherwise, I guess it goes on the shelf for another 8 months until I am out of college. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Hi JC,
I have an old Baron 28. I haven't flown it in 20 years. But I remember that it was a very good flying heli. It is a colective pitch model and you'll be VERY wise to get a heading hold gyro for it. Hovers very easily with one, hell without! It is very quick to turn as it is a short aircraft. It will do nice loops and rolls if you stay smooth. Mine has the OS28 in it also and it does a real good job. I would advise adding a 2 or 3 oz header tank on it.

The local fliers around here were just geting into 3D flying back then.
Mine has setup for too long with out TLC so I've bought newer heli's to get back at it.
Build it and enjoy.

so should I be in the market for new servos, or can I use the 148's? I can't seem to tell from all the reading. Right now I have plans to purchase a heading hold gyro, but beyond that? I would assume that you would use the aircraft radio with the throttle tied to the collective? This makes inverted impossible... How is this reconcilled with a computer radio? Is that what the flight mode switch changes? Whew. This is a lot of work

I learned on one!

I'm in Spokane and can answer any questions you have about the B28. I sold a bunch of spare stuff for them this spring unfortunately though as parts are scarce now. Shoot me an email with a number and good time to call. snocat1@hotmail.com
