e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Have I destroyed my battery pack?

I recently added 2 extra cells to my 12 cell 2400 Nicad packs making them into 14 cells to run in my Hacker powered Logo 10, I took it out this weekend to test it and just hovered around for 4-5 minutes, when I took the pack out it was too hot to touch + due to the heat alot of the covering on the batteries just peeled off or melted away.

I think this pack is almost certainely destroyed, is this the case and if it is can anyone tell me why this happened, when using 12 cell packs on my logo the batteries are only slightly warm after 6-7 minutes?

Thanks

When you add extra cells to your by, you have to do some cycles, so the cells are evenly charged. Test the pack with some cycles, that way you can check if it's ok.
I've done the same change to my packs, even same heli and motor. The first time cycle some cells were slightly warmer, but after three cycles it was ok.
Did you reïnitialize the controller, you have to do this when changing packs size

Thanks I will definitely cycle my 2 other packs before frying them too. The Hacker speed controller I was using was brand new and I just followed the instructions on the leaflet it cam with to set it up in Governor mod, not sure if I initialised it?

That should do the initialisation, I haven't got this controller so I cannot answer for sure, but I think this will be ok

Cycle test it. Heat is not great, but since it only
happened once, it may be OK. If it will cycle to full capacity, I would say keep using it!

When adding or replacing cells try and discharge them (old ones and new ones separately) to a voltage of eg 0,8 V / cell, then solder them together, then cycle them a few times at low current as if you were forming a brandnew pack.
Otherwise you might fry cells whilst charging, or reverse the ones with less capacity whilst discharging, both will probably kill them.
Some say you should *never* add or replace cells to/in a existing pack, but I think if brand and (real, not printed-on) capacity matches, it will work.
At the first fast-charge cycles I'd have a thermometer handy and watch the pack closely.
