Here's a dumb question, but one that I need to ask... How do you go about cleaning the exhaust and dust residue off your heli's after you fly?? I've heard of people taking a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and spraying it down with that.. I've been simply cleaning it with windex and a towel.. Does the spraying rubbing alcohol trick work ok.. or can it wreak havoc on your engine and plastic components..

Also, on plastic ball joints, do you lube them or leave them alone?? Does oil breakdown the properties of the plastics and make them more prone to failure?? Just trying to create less friction on the moving parts..

Cleaning?

Hi deckerv, I have never used anything other than Windex, it works fine, use it after every flight, or at least after every days flying. Don't lube the plastic balls or links, do oil the tail pitch slider and swash plate-only a couple of drops.
The balls and links are more or less self lubricating, you can use a tool to loosen up the links a bit if they are too tight, or just fly them (be sure there is no binding) and they will "break-in" after several flights.

If you put oil or grease on them it will only collect dirt and that will act like sandpaper and ware the parts quickly.

This is especially true for newer pilots who will be hovering close to the ground for several tanks of fuel.

BTW, there are NO dumb questions, unless you want to know the winning loto numbers-then I would play them if I knew!

I would avoid using any solvent as it will "wash" dirt into the bearings. I just use an old "T" shirt and a small scredriver to get into the corners.

Thanks!!

Thanks!! I can't believe how much fun heli's are, and I can't believe it took me 20 years to find out!! I'll continue to do as I am then, and not worry about the plastic parts so much..

Carb cleaner

Ed,
Does carb cleaner harm the plastics??? I once used CRC's electric motor cleaner on a slot car, and it melted within 30 seconds of contact.. It was neat watching the magnets pull through the plastic and the whole thing just fall apart.. but I'd sure hate to do that to a Raptor..

Cleaning?

I'm sure ed meant to use it only on the aluminum parts, but, it is quite caustic stuff I would use caution if you use it.

Cleaning Solution

I got this recipe from a Heli Newsgroup. It seems to do a good job.

Put in a gallon jug

2 oz. Liquid dish soap,
8 oz. Ammonia,
16 oz. Rubbing alcohol,

Fill the jug the rest of the way with water, put in spray bottle.
Works great. After a day of flying I spray the lower half of the chopper and let it run off then wipe with paper towel.

BTW the comments aren't mine!

Regards,
Winger

Doug is right, avoid using any solvent . Just use old T shirt to wipe off those oil. My R30 still look new after 6 months and close to 200 flights .

my error - it was break cleaner not carb cleaner ..

glass cleaner works great too. actually it was break cleaner in a yellow can . no parts ever melted , jut really cleaned well .. I spray only directly at the sides of the motor and shroud , header, and muffler , and backplate, where the fuel collects .. the stuff dries immediately .. sure gets all the gook out ..

never seen the plastic parts melt before , or crazed . I do it with a long focus extension tube - short squirts .. it does remove the fuel and oil instantly . giving a clean shine .. now I wouldn't overspray it anywhere up front or on top, thats hand wiped down with a rag ..

tower rapes you HUGE on WC fuel.

Actually, your LHS can get it cause they
distribute through the majors like Great Planes.
Whether your LHS wants to do it for you is
another question.

You can always buy direct but shipping small
quantities can be prohibitive (due to hazmat) but
the cleaner isn't subject to hazmat.

If you and friends can get a big order together,
like 10+ cases, fuel is cheap factory direct
cause you get club pricing and about $100
to ship via motor freight.
