Crashed? Discussion and Photos > Aerobatic auto mid-air boomstrike

I was doing a multi-piro-flipping auto with my Sceadu today. I had just flipped right-side-up and the blades had slowed a bit (about 500rpm). I did a slight flare to speed up the blades (they may have overspeeded during the flare) and heard the dreaded "pank". The heli was still at about 500ft, so I don't have a lot more detail. After the boomstrike, I had time to switch out of throttle hold, out of idle-up, kill the motor, drink a beer....etc.

I do run my blades tight in the grips. I always verify that the blades have similar fold-back resistance. What did I do wrong? Was it an unpowered woof & poof? If it had happened when the headspeed was low, I would assume one blade stalled while the other did not causing a blade to fold back. But, the boomstrike happened when the blades were humming.

Head Speed!

You already said it...Headspeed was down to 500 RPM. Way too low to restart without a lot of luck. Keep you headspeed up in your aerobatics.

Thanks for the feedback. You're right. In addition to the low headspeed, I think I let it get too much vertical velocity (they go hand-in-hand). Then, this high velocity let one of the blades fold back in the grip slightly. When I tried to restart the rotor too quickly, the lift differential between the two blades kicked in and that was all she wrote.

Thanks,
