| man, I had a real great day at the field today! After my last adventure with my flying wand (starter wand that is, not the "harry potter" kind) breaking the rotor head mechanics on my ZXX, I finally got the new parts and a new radio system (Futaba 6XHS) in the mail. One of my buds helped me set everything up and we were off to flying in no time. The first couple flights were great (He was at the sticks) but later I decided I wanted to try it out. I hadn't flown the chopper for about a month so we hooked up a buddy box system between our two trannies. We had flown the heli about half a tank, and landed it. Seconds later, when we went for a second flight, the head spooled up to speed and the second it was off the ground it started to pyro around as if the tail rotor wasn't there! From that point, we tried to stop it but realized non of us had any control over that booger!
Needless to say, it crashed.... but why? Afterward we checked it over for any obvious signs of failure but came up empty. Here are the details:
Flown all day - no problem.
Fully charged batteries EVERYWHERE
Range checked perfect
GY401/9253 check out perfect before and after
full tank
belt drive still works
no missing teethe anywhere
engine was still running after the crash
we were alone at the field - could not have been shot down
The only obvious thing was that the belt was loose and didn't drive the tail, but before that flight (mind you, it worked PERFECT all day) The belt was perfectly tight.
Unless I'm wrong, it would seem as though the belt just came loose in flight (all on it's own?) but how would that account for us not having any control? |
