Miniature Aircraft Nitro/Gas Helicopters > Evolve prototype (based on minair mechanical components)

Hi,

First up is a special thanks to mark at mjpcarbon.com for doing an excellent job of cutting these frames from an autocad drawing in what is an unbelievably short amount of time. If anybody is looking to get some work done this is the person to go to, accurate, fast and some of the best looking carbon I've seen so far.

Second up, this model has absolutely nothing to do with minature aircraft other than it uses some of there parts. Do not call minature looking for info on this model simply because they wont know anything about it. This should be viewed as nothing more than an expierment simply because that is what it is.

Figured a few of you out there in rr land may be interested in this, the post is simply meant as a discussion of the protoype. Considering this is the first attempt there are a few minor mistakes that will be fixed in the next version. I need to add that the mistakes where mine, we are human after all

Many of you will remember me discussing the possibility of mixing the minair se controll system with a frame set designed to have the tank in the back.

Here she is.......

Side view

What your looking at in the pics is a custom set of frames using minair components, the goal was to use the best from several models with a new layout.

You see a se control system (slightly different layout) along with the tank in the back, lower carbon frame brace, stacked frames, extreme extended main shaft with 3rd bearing block, newstyle clutch bell, reduced part count (compared to st, ct, se or 2k) and the one thing you probably dont see is a lot of work that went into it. Guess you cant call it work when its fun

The prototype is using a os 91 cspec @ 7.75 to 1 (12t pinion on a 93t spur), zimmerman os91 muffler, ds9151 on collective, 9202's elsewhere. The engine is brand new and is still breaking in, I do have 8 flights on it and am very satisifed so far but its hard for me to abuse a new motor so they have been mild flights.

The se has without a doubt been one of the best flying helis available for many years, the pro2 and fury fit into the same category. This is simply an expierment to see if there is any room for improvement. Too be perfectly honest its gonna be a little while before I can answer that myself untill the new motor is broken in.

Price and availability? Not sure, it simply depends on the demand (if any) and when new prototype is built. I am doing this in my spare time and simply to satisfy my desire to see if it can be done better.

CCPM, yes a version is in the works but availability is going to depend on interest. It will be very simular to the standard mix version shown here, stacked frame and the tank in the back.

If your interested in any version of this heli please put a post up to let mark know, if you see anything that could be done better or different then please put a post up.

If at some time this does become available it will simply be sold as a conversion kit, frames only. Depending on which heli you have (st, ct, se, p2k) you will need to purchase a few parts (ie fury clutch, p2k roll cradle) to get it assembled.

Its 100% up to you guys & mark if this becomes available or not, the only profit I will gain from this project is simply the pleasure of doing it my way (rite or wrong as it may be). Mark has the rite to sell the frames and I have no interest in the $$$ side of this at all.

Good, bad or otherwise please post and let your thoughts be known.

Complete Frame Set
Lower Frame Brace
The frame brace may be available from mark in the near future, if you look in the middle you'll notice it bolts to the side frames as well. The brace add's a lot of rigidty to the lower frame area and helps to keep the vibes down with the new big block motors. If your interested in this put a post up

Completely Awsome effort !

Dude, I really applaud your effort. This is great stuff and really gets you thinking.

1) My first thought is towards FAI use. How different is the SE control system from the Pro2K??? I don't have either so I'm not sure.

2) As the Pro2K is already a stacked frame/rear tank system, is your Evolve basically a Pro2K with a Fury clutch system??? Do you really gain anything here, i.e. weight, parts count, etc....?

3) What canopy are you going to use?

4) The newer Tempest clutch block set-up might worth incorporating into your next frame set. It looks pretty stout.

Superb!

Auger,

A superb piece of work there with some great ideas, all the good bits from all the best XL machines, the Fury clutch, longer shaft and extra bearing support, Pro rear tank, SE controls and loads of lovely carbon! Well done, I trust she is all you hoped for in the air. Makes my 'A' frame 60 conversion to a Fury homebuild look a bit feeble!

Very Interesting

Nice work, but don't crash . A quick question, why is all the front mounted so low. I would think you would want the weight closer to the rotor head to make the model roll truer. I like the rear mounted tank though.

On a dog sled team, if you're not the lead dog, the view never changes.

Talented

Marvelous work Auger. Will this be the Xcell Auger 90

I hope you made extra frames. Keep us informed with the testing
and flight characteristics.

Nice work. Is your design intended for FAI style or 3D style flying?

How about a chasis that connects the engine mount to the main shaft bearing and the rest build around the chasis?

Cheers

Hi,

optech, here is a picture of a pro2k http://my.erinet.com/8A/04/cls/misc/evo/cspec012.jpg The pro uses the fore/aft cyclic to control the collective where as the se uses the left/right cyclic to control the collective.

The best way to some it up would be a stacked frame with the tank in the back using the se control system, fury clutch & extreme mainshaft.

Parts count is about the same as the fury, keeping in mind this machine is pretty much all metal it weighs in at 10.25 lbs ready to go with body & 200g blades.

I mounted a fury canopy for now.

mp, so far she is definitely a fine flier. Few more tanks and I get to push her a little farther.

Gordie, its basically the same setup as my pro's & se. Not saying its rite or wrong but at least its a fair comparison, I will move the battery up later on and see the effect. To be honest the motor & fuel weigh a heck of a lot more than the battery so I generally dont worry too much about it. This was one of my mistakes, the throttle servo will go in front of the collective and bring the radio tray up a bit, as it is now its in about the same position as the pro.

Jeff h, when ever your wife lets you come up my way

Ben, I kinda figured you would enjoy this a little. A step in the desired direction!

Why does everyone keep mentioning extra frames & crashes, maybe it has something to do with my rr name

Chris c, both styles. A accurate flying heli will do both styles as well as the pilot can fly them.

Mobile, my biggest problem is actually finding the project I wanted to work on I cleaned it up before putting this bird together and it stayed fairly clean for a few days

I will get some more flights on her this weekend and will post some more info on how it goes, will also post some flying pics if windows digital camera picture downloader thingy does'nt delete them this time around.

Hi,

Quite a few flights since the last post, flies just like an se without the trim shift and hovers as well as a pro2k. Roll's are considerbly better than the 2k. Still working on breaking the motor in aka still have a few more gallons to go

A couple of pics with the body on
