Aerial Photography and Video > Video Tests with Airfoil V2 mount

Hi there

Can anybody give me some advice about shooting video with a V2 mount. Last week we went testing with a fairly new rig but had poor results with awful jerkiness whilst panning and tilting. We also experienced roll waggle when doing some maoeuvres. I suppose the gyro stabiliser option would smooth the waggle but that would present a payload penalty.

We also had trouble supporting the weight of anything like a serious professional videocam. The bungies were at full stretch. Has anybody tried stronger types successfully and if so, where can I get some?

We had problems balancing the heli with a medium format Rollei (very heavy) and so has anybody found a more suitable lightweight camera?

The mount has produced some absolutely stunning still shots using 35mm.

Hello John

The video camera is a Sony PD 100AP and weighs 1.2Kg.
The Rollei is a 6006 and weighs in at a hefty 2.2Kg. That also happens to be the weight of the next step up in Pro video camera from Sony - the PD150.

What is your solution for the pan/tilt servo snatch?

Regards

I'll try and capture a short snippet of video to illustrate what I mean about snatch. It's not really a matter of introducing delay, more a question of making the control system less aggressive as a pan or tilt begins or ends. Perhaps a slower servo set up with some proportional mixed in. Have you any ideas about that?

The VX2000 is a rebadged PD150 for the Prosumer market. There are some internal software differences and a better tape mechanism but I don't think the weight difference is as you say.

For sure, it was difficult to get a fore/aft balance with the PD100 but what do you state as a payload range for the V2?

Perhaps putting camera weight restrictions on your mounts would solve problems like this John.

Hello John

Looking forward to seeing the new heavy duty heli.

In the meantime, you said you usually carry the gyro stabiliser with your VX2000, how much does that stabiliser weigh on its own. Presumably it needs power to spin it up so what is the voltage and what battery power / duration do you need to run it. How long can you fly before recharging or replacing the power supply?

Oops, forgot to ask a supplementary...

Originally, I asked about alternative Bungy cords because our PD100 had them at full stretch. Obviously, you're the man to ask and as the VX2000 / gyro stabiliser combination is heavier than our PD100, what extra do you do to support the mount?

Hi John

How much does that stabiliser weigh in at? As far as the extra Bungy cords are concerned, are they anything special? If so where and how much would it be for us to get some?

Hi John
We were running the Sony PD100 without the stabiliser and the cords were fully stretched. Adding another 2lbs is a serious penalty for that method of stabilisation. You mentioned the gyro / inverter... that implies that the gyro doesn't use a standard voltage like 4.8v or 12v. What voltage does the inverter have to produce? Are there any lighter gyros with better energy requirements that you can recommend or supply?
