e-MS Composit Hornet > Hornet Tail spinning out of control at higher pitches

At lower rpm, my hornets tail and heading lock do a decent job, but at higher pitch and throttle, the tail doesn't produce enough force to counter the torque from the rotors so it spins to the left uncontrollably even when the tail is at full throw trying to turn it right. Am I underspeeding the motor for that particular pitch? Anyone know anything about this.

Make sure that the hub is not slipping on the tail rotor output shaft. Very common problem.

Best of luck

slipping

It doesn't seem to be slipping, I already checked that, when you turn the main gear and hold the tail gear, you cant get it to skip. Although I can hear a clicking inside the tail rotor shaft at certain points in the main gear' rotation. This thing is killing me, I don't know whats wrong with it.

pinion...

I had a similar problem with mine and it was a bad pinion gear. It was slipping on the motor shaft and causing the drive gear to loose power. You would see it in the tail first then the rotor would slow down.

Don't you just love those little buggers.

Check out the hub on the stub shaft that it isn't slipping, since it is simply CA'd on. I haven't had much problem with the TR gears slipping, but have had problems in the past with the hub slipping as well as the motor pinion slipping.

Slipped on pinion

That sounds right on, my pinion was slippin big time, but I wouldn't figure it would cause such problems, it throught it acted a little like a clutch, case it caused it to spool up nicely. It actually destroyed the gear so I had to replace it anyways. I counted wrong and had the 11 tooth one on instead of the 12 because 12 is recommended for my cells. What is 11 recommended for. Im waiting for the wood glue to dry on my dowel training gear (I know how to fly, I just don't trust this heli until is truly setup). Thanks for all your help so far, Ill tell you if I got it or not.

Also make sure you are flying on headspeed and not pitch. Too much pitch will overrun the tail for sure. Lift goes up exponentially per RPM, so the higher the headspead (to a point) the better. Less torque for the tail to counteract. If something was slipping, you usually get a random piro from the heli, and then all is well. If you only get the spinning from high pitch, then something else is afoot...

Tail problems

I have had the same problems with my Hornet. I have checked all of the areas for slipping, none present. I have even pinned the hub to the tail output shaft because it would break loose trying to get more pitch out of it, but the tail will still piro slowly. I put it away for quite a while because it isn't much fun flying around with a slow piro to one side during the entire flight while your transmitter stick is buried full right. Is everyone running the stock tail blades? What head speed are you running? I have upgraded to CP, but the motor/controller, etc are all from the stock FP set up. Any ideas/advice would be appreciated.

Solved

Well I solved the tail problem, im stuck on other problems are the present. But anyways Ryan I think my problem was gear skipping. I don't know how you checked for slippage but hold the main gear and try to twist the tail output shaft. You should be able to get some good torque (try not break anything) without anything skipping. I didn't think that just because it would skip when I torqued pretty hard that it wouldn't affect flight, becuase I didn't think that that much torque would occur, however I was supprised becuase it appears that the higher rpms the tail needs to correct a lot and the tail will skip if "any" skipping is allowed.

Well I don't know if that was your problem or not but it turned out to be mine, the tail gears were clicking on certain teeth. I order the speed up gears as well as a longer titanium shaft. After this I didn't notice a problem anymore

How did you pin the tail hub on. I just epoxied it and it stayed (almost to good because I need to change it when i got the titanium shaft). Did you make sure that your servo will pull the pitch slider all the way it is allowed on the shaft. Are you at least getting good pitch on the ground.
