The past 4-5 tanks I have been practicing nose-in hovering. I have been using the training skids and keeping the heli about 2 feet off the ground. Though I am not real comfortable with the nose-in hovering, I can (for the most part) sustain it. After a few minutes of nose -in, I flew the heli out of nose-in to a point about 50 feet away. With tail facing me I figured I'd back it in closer to me (something I have done many, many, many, times before). On the way back I whacked the ground with the main rotor blades. I am trying to figure out how/why I let this happen ..... during a very comfortable and familiar phase of flight (i.e, tail facing me). My guess is that I took (tail-in) hovering for granted and did not concentrate like I should have ..... like I use to ???? (Rap 60). Bob

Were you close to the ground on your backwards slide back to you?

When doing low altitude manuvering practice,
Usually If I were backing up the heli, the further it is away the higher
I keep it, in case of wind or other errors etc, since the heli is so low the
ground effect from the rotor wash may have caused unstable lift.
In the same situation I would have been about 10 feet up at 50
feet away then decend slightly as it gets near me transitioning into
a hover.
This way you can see it better when it's out there and when it gets
closer too, with room to spare and flying in clean air.
