Tools and Field Equipment > Heli Transport/Test Stand

Here is a heli transport and test stand that I made. It is based on a design that I saw in Ray's Authoritative Heli Manual. The heli skids snap firmly into place and it can be used as a transport stand, or attached to the top of a step ladder for use as a test stand for tuning, blade tracking, etc..

are the little "clampy things" made out of wood?

Thanks guys

RaptorHelius,

Yes, I do have the heli clamped down. The way the stand is designed, the skids simply snap in place. The heli cannot unlock itself and it can slide neither forward or backwards. The stand itself is attached to the step ladder with two bolts and wing nuts. You can see them if you look closely in the picture. The bolt holes are drilled in the stand right near the heli's center of gravity so that it's well balanced when mounted to the top of the ladder.

daggit,

Yes, The skid clamps are made out of wood. Here's a few more pictures that will hopefully show how it works in a little more detail..

Here's a scrap piece that was left over from the skid clamps

From the front you can see how the heli's skids snap into position under the clamps

From the side you can see that the skid clamps are positioned so that they are tight against the skid cross supports. This keeps the heli from sliding front or back

nice job

I saw this in Ray's manual too. Excellent job with it! The distance between the two rows of clamps has to slightly more than the spread of the slids I assume. Do the skids then have to be open slightly larger than they are normally in order to snap on? BTW do you wear a nifty helmet like Ray does in his book?

RaptorHelius,

I don't really have any detailed plans for the stand, but let me give it a shot.......

The base is a 14"x14" piece of 3/4" Plywood

For the base clamps I started with two 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" blocks of wood that were about 12" long.

While they were still in one piece I had my buddy notch out the bottom for the skids using his table saw. The notch is about a 7/16" square. I then had him make the 45 degree angle cut. This angle cut helps to spread the skids a little bit as you press the heli onto the stand.

I then centered my heli onto the base and made a line along the inside edge of each skid. I also marked off the location of the skid cross supports.

The next step was to cut each 12" piece into three individual pieces (you'll end up with six total - three for each side). As you can see on my stand, the base clamps are in three pieces along each skid. The end pieces are approximately 1-1/2" long, and the center pieces are about 4-3/4" long. Once each of the 12" pieces are cut into three individual pieces, mark off where they will be mounted on the main base. You'll want the smaller (1-1/2") end pieces to be mounted so that they touch the heli skid cross supports. This will keep the heli from sliding front or back. The base clamps should also be mounted so that the bottom, outside edge of the 7/16" cut-outs line up with the inside edge of the skids. This line should already be marked on the base.

The next step is to mount the base clamps onto the main base using Wood screws. I pre-drilled the holes to keep the wood from splitting out from the screws. Note:In addition to the wood screws, I put a thin film of wood glue on the bottom of each base clamp before I mounted them.

Next step is to drill the two holes for mounting the stand to the top of a step ladder. I made a line across the main base right where my center of gravity is on the heli (directly below the mainshaft). The center to center distance of my holes was about 6-1/4".

After that I sanded everything down and applied two coats of sanding sealer, followed by two coats of good quality fuel proof paint.

After the paint dried I mounted four small rubber feet to the base of the stand and that was it

Oh yeah, to mount the stand on my step ladder I use two 1/4" x 3" carriage bolts with wingnuts. You'll have to drill two holes in the top of your step ladder the same distance apart as the ones you drilled in your heli stand. While you could probably mount your stand right to the top of your ladder with the carriage bolts, I placed an additional block of wood benteath the top step of the ladder for added support. This block of wood will also need to have two doles drilled the same distance apart as the two holes in the heli stand. So to sum up mounting of the stand to the ladder..... the stand goes on top of the ladder, two 3" carriage bolts come down through the stand, through the top step of the ladder and through the additional wooden block. Put a washer and a wing nut on each carriage bolt and tighten it up and you're ready to go

I like to weight the base of the ladder down to, although I don't know if this is necessary.

tisrich,

Yes that's correct. The skids have to spread apart a little bit before they snap into place under the base clamp.

No, I don't where a helmet like Ray

Nice Job!

I use a 6' ladder with bungie cords instead of building a rig but you did a very nice job on yours.Watch out I hear the peanut gallery building and gonna tell you it is bad to strap your heli down at full throttle, WATCH OUT!

That's the nicest setup I've seen yet!! Good job. Your pictures and instructions are nice and detailed. Thanks for sharing. Rick

How do they come out? Do you spread tha skids and pull it off or is there a simpler way. I would thank that if you spread the skids too many times they will weaken and eventually break?

Safe Cracker,

I have heard the same thing about full throttle on test stands. Actually, I never take mine much past 50% while on the test stand. I go just enough til I hit the 5 or 6 degree pitch point so I can get a good look at the blade tracking. If I go above that, it's just for a very short blip of the throttle as I fine tune the carb. I wouldn't recommend full throttle/pitch for any sustained length of time on a test stand. I think at 50% throttle (5-6 degrees) and below your OK. Just my opinion.

Rick,

Thanks

raptorkid,

Yes, you do have to spread the skids apart a tiny bit, but it's not that much. The cross supports are plenty strong enough to withstand that. You only mount the base clamps so that the bottom inside edge of the skid cut-out lines up with the inside edge of your skids. That way the cross supports aren't under any pressure when on the stand.
