Hi guys I wanted to know where i could find a good color camera that is pretty stable in the air ,the space for the cam is 2"x2"x2" square , the dimensions can be altered slightly depending on size

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Guardian,

Try looking at (www.supercircuits.com) or the guys at (www.polarisusa.com). If they don't have it also try (www.wirelessvideocameras.com) I am sure you should be able to find what you are looking for at one of these three places. No particular order, they are all great to deal with.

Hope that helps!

Do you need a 12v camera or a 5v camera?

The Panasonic CX161 is a tiny little CCD camera that runs on 5v. It comes with an exposed circuit board so you'd have to wrap it in something. Lot's of folks use this camera when weight is a consideration.

Bill

I don't really know for sure what voltage i will need, 5v will drain my battery slower than a 12v, but then again I was going to use a seperate bat for the cam, what do you guys think I should use ?12v or 5v ?

Thanks,
Mike

I assumed you were interested in just the CCD camera portion of a video system, but I'm thinking now you want a bit more than that.

What are you trying to accomplish? Do you wish to capture some aerial video or still photos? Do you have a wireless transmitter already?

Once we better understand what you are trying to do we can point you better.

I just went through this same process Mike and ended up buying the PC215XS from Supercircuits. I found the field of options overwhelming so I built a spreadsheet then assigned a point value to each of the criteria (resolution, weight, power, and eceteras) and then weighted the criteria to score each camera. The PC215XS had the best score which isn't surprising since it is one of the newer cameras. This is why it won:

1) Price = $99. Not the best but pretty low.
2) Resolution = 480 lines. The best that I looked at and the most information that could easily be downlinked at 2.4 GHz.
3) Lux = 3. Not very good but I do not plan on using heli-video at night so this was a non-issue for me.
4) FOV = 70 degrees. Close to the best in cameras that met my basic needs. Since I will use the video for RPV work a large field-of-view was important.
5)Volts = 12, current = 100mA, power = 1.2 watts. Not the lowest power draw (close though) but great power vs. resolution.
6) Size = 1.4 in^2 therefore 2 inches across the diagonal. There are much smaller cameras but this catagory was simply a go/no-go for me and this was small enough.
7) Weight is unknown to me but inconsequential unless you are doing micro-vehicles.

I hope seeing how I came to my conclusions can help you find the right camera for your needs. As far as voltage goes a lower voltage DOES NOT mean longer battery life. You need to multiply the voltage and the current to get power. The lower the power the longer a given set of batteries will last. If you want a lighter battery pack that will usually mean using 5 volts but it will not last as long for a given power consumption.

The easiest way to determine battery life is to add up all of the current being drawn by the devices in your system. So if you use a 100mA camera, 300mA transmitter, and 10mA microphone the system is drawing 410mA. If all are operating at 12V you could put 10 AA batteries in series. If each battery has a rating of 1750mAh (milliamp hours) then 1750/410 is about 4 hours.

Sorry to ramble on but I just finished this process to it is fresh in my mind.

Cheers,
Chris

I am going to be using it in a scratchbuilt little bird, the 21st century toys is only 1/6.5, so I plan on enlarging it by 150% which will bring it out at 1/6th scale exact, I was going to install it so I could fly the heli via the camera, when say behind a tree line , weight is not really an issue, space is, i did like the system from black widow, any suggestions for a clear, crisp picture, hi res cam ?

Thanks,
Mike
