one of my military scale heli's from a while back in the early eighties. back to scale ..

it's won a few contests on the east coast .. the AH64 sea apache, sea knight were hot back in days . I have the other originals from hirobo too huey , tow cobra , gazelle , and a few others that I got as a field rep for GMP, remember the Gorhams?.. these pic are old as you can see taken with a regular camera ..

the mechanics are older hirobo sst/ddf , body was usher enterprizes ah64 - you can get from century . installed nav lights and strobes inside and out on the wings .. rocket pods are real 22LR lead bullets tips, hellfires are estes .. the seaknight is hirobo #0001 in the us .
building scale, sport, semi, and flying them, I enjoy alot ..

Ed,
Very nice work !! Wish I had your talent as really enjoy scale. Have had a few built, but I know from tying flys for fishing, there is nothing like doing it yourself. Look forward to seeing your projects.

Ed,

You are a busy man.....Dauphin2 looks like it will be great also !! Wish you were down here, I give you my L&O Dauphin4 to do as a project. My builder decided not to do it, so am contemplating what to do with it...tho I'd still like to have it built. Keep us posted.

i realize that this post is a little old, but i just had to say that Apache looks incredible. if time and finances permit, i would love to get into scale military helis. do you have any videos of it (the Apache) in action?

ed,
i have been researching a future scale project for myself and have been collecting data on the apache. i noticed that yours has the twin tail rotors like the full size counterpart, are those babies functional? or is it for static display? if it is functional how did you get it to work? also, does anyone make functional swept tip main rotors that you know of?

hi cerberus , the heli actually flies .. althought it been hangered for awhile .. yes the tail rotor shaft unit I made myself .. I actually used bar stock steel which was made on a unimate mini lathe .. the tail is excell style , with two holes for the pins set at 55 degrees as with and earlier version of the apache ..

when it spun it was unreal to see it work without breaking apart .. low rotor helped there .. I could of done it with two tsk or kalt tail hubs and set screws but I wanted the excel delta hinge to work there .this tail shaft ws longer than what is normal for a r/c heli ..

I remember miniature aircraft made a xcel with twin tail rotors two on opposite sides of the fin .. this same shaft would work well , but a second hole would have to be made for 55 degree setup .. a first at something different ..

now regarding the swept tip blades , yes I saw them , there is a japanese company that did make a beautiful quad set of apache carbon rotors and it comes with a fantastic cnc machined rotor head system .. I'm still looking for the reference and will update you on who there are ..

Ed,
I know I had video of your apache flying in 1989. It's old video but the one I looked at this weekend from 1989 was still nice and clear.
By the way, whatever happened to the Gorhams? I recall John died many years back. Was always down to earth, just like Walt Schoonard. Those were the kind of guys who always treated everyone like a friend and always had time to give advice and encouragement.
I go to Long Island about every six months. Where do you fly ?
I'll keep digging in my closet for that video.

I think Mr. Gorham would be sad to hear that he died years ago

Apache question

Ed did you make your stabalizer function like the real AH64?
If so how did you engineer it.

I for one am glad to hear that Mr Gorham is still with us. I was told he had passed away, but that was obviously wrong information. What about Robert, is he still into RC helis?

The last I knew of anything about Robert Gorham was at the 2nd or 3rd IRCHA Jamboree(Dayton) where he flew.

I have one of the Magic Models(Firebirds) A64s I should sell.
This started as a Century(who got it from someone else) fuse but they enlonggated the tail to be more scale. Has vacum formed and resin scale parts(guns, rockets, etc) and their own LG. I had the X-tail hub at one time, but it got borrowed and never returned. I only partially started to put it together. I have some pics.

Thanks Mike DD
I saw the GMP video of Robert Gorham flying the cricket, and ran out and bought a cricket. this was in 1980-81 (I'm getting old). I then saw him flying his GMP Cobra in a Jet Ranger fuse and bought one of those too. So, as you can see, I was very impressed by the Gorhams. As a matter fact, I still have a GMP Legend in good shape. Thinking of putting it in an old Kalt Bell 222 fuse I have in the garage.

Take care and stay safe.

hi flying tiger, and friends , right now I'm grounded for awhile due to a recent bicycle accident with a car - tour de france in nyc, hehe - hit a side mirror and got stiches on my right hand. bummer . my thumbs only flying days have been temporarily curtailed. luckily I can type with one finger .

heres a previous reply on what I chose, it's refers to the perfect paint and it's colors .. please note I did blend two colors together for the effect you see , greens and greys , I like the azure blue which was the highlight effect, great color to use for definative military look.

Roy , keep looking , it'll turn up, I'm also looking for vid's on my tow cobra flying during my whitestone club days .. keep em flying..

schemes I chose.
"the colors used on the apache were dark slate grey che#39 , sea blue che#44 , azure blue che#35, and a mix of greens and greys. make sure you get the flat clear che#43.. always for fuel proofing .. the spray cans should make it a easy job , but an airbrush will give it the nice blending of colors touch for your project heli or a later project "

heres the site , enjoy

Hi Ed,

Very impressed by your apache. I dream of building one scale 1/7. Have been looking for a fuse that size (or smaller) without result in Europe. Would any of you know where to get one?
