wheelchair bound man for fending off
an attacker.

Z, the only reason that IS a story is that 99% of the population think it is insane.

I voted "no" on the poll.

On the subject of political correctness, I was listening to something on the radio last night : The Police are going to be instructed not to use phrases such as "rule of thumb" and "nitty gritty" because some idiot instructing them on PC thinks it could insult people . Something to do with a three hundred year old law about beating your wife!

This country is going mad .

Who the hell is going to be offended by 'rule of thumb'? The thumbless? 'Nitty Gritty'? You are wrong, I am afraid, the country has already gone completely made. I didn't realise how bad it was until I left and had the luxury of seeing my home friom the perspective of an outsider. When I visit now, it seems to be a madhouse.

PC's getting out of hand everywhere.

The rule of thumb is an old informal law in the US and Britain stating that it is legal to beat one's wife with a stick so long as it is no thicker than the man's thumb.

Thanks for the info, I'll just pop out into the garden and look for a stick of the right size!

Money stolen from the cash register: $100
Diesel fuel burned chasing the thieves: $27
Insurance deductable for the wrecked Hummer: $500

Seeing the look on the dumb bastards faces the second before you run them over with your mega-SUV...Priceless!

I'd have just shot the idiots in the first place. A lot cheaper and much less risky from a legal standpoint.

And I voted "NO." Those guys got exactly what they deserved. The business owner did the community a service by making sure those guys are off the street.

What's really sad (and a sign of the times) is that this guy could be successfully prosecuted for doing what he did.

He would have been better off shooting them during the actual commission of the crime.

Would the basis of a successful prosecution rest on the risk posed to innocent motorists caught by his (understandable) rage, or simply his choice of weapon? Or is it a question of acting in revenge after the event rather than preventing it from happening?

Basically, in the US the only situation that justifies the use of lethal force (and using a Hummer as a ram certainly qualifies as lethal force ) is to prevent the death or serious bodily injury of an innocent person. Of course, in the UK even this is not allowed. You are supposed to stand there and turn both cheeks at once while they carve you up; but I digress.

So, his pursuit of the miscreants after they had left his business foils the litmus test. They did the deed and were trying to make their escape, therefore they were no longer a threat to "Peter".

Now, a VERY creative grand jury (who will decide whether or not "Peter" is formally charged) might reason that their haste to escape posed a threat to innocent motorists, and therefore "Peter" did the public a service by taking them out. I've seen "street justice" covered for on thinner premises; we can only hope such prevails here. In Arizona, he's got a chance on skating out of this. In Kalifornia, or most northeastern parts of the US, he would be toast.

I suppose if the suspects were armed it could be self defense (even though he had chased them)? or at least he could say he "accidentally" ran over the car ? Which may be true, I'm not sure a guy would intentionally ram them that hard Not a lot of details in the article.
