Well first I guess I better introduce myself... I've always been into R/C models of some sort, mostly Nitro Off-Road buggies etc... but never the helis'. Finally grew the balls to spend some $1400 odd dollars on a heli and get into the hobby.

What I bought was a Sceadu .30, OS .32SX-H, Fut GY-401, Fut 9CHP set-up.

After building the kit and realizing the Center Hub was machined incorrectly at Hirobo, I got it ready to fly. The pitch is set to -4,+5,+11 right now with a smooth curve. The throttle curve is smooth from the idle at about 20% up to 100% at wide open.

Throttle-Cut is all set up etc... so I took it out to the field behind my house with my training gear on.

First flight I put a tank of gas through it and made some trim adjustments to make it not want to roll over on take off. It is still a tad bit tail heavy and I don't quite know the best solution to that. Move the gyro up front maybe? (The batt is all the way forward already).

Took the rest of the day off to think of ways to fly better etc... and went back out the next day.

I was able to take off and somewhat hover for a few seconds. For some reason the only way I can make it hover is to make VERY quick, VERY small taps to the cyclic. It seems the servos are so strong that when i fly it like this the whole heli just jerks around under the perfectly hovering blade disc.

Are there any adjustments that need to be made to the cyclic controls regarding sensitivity etc...?

I practiced a few more hovers and ended up all over the place and ultimately ended up crash landing into the grassy hill. I lucked out and the training gear saved me from de-blading the machine on the hill and it just slid down the hill on the training gear. I called it a day after that.

Anyone have some good tips/tricks on where I should go from here? I know I have great hand/eye coordination, do I just need to spend more time behind the wheel? Or am I missing something that could be making the machine hard to fly?

Thanks a TON and I love this hobby already.

First Flights?

First things first, Welcome to RunRyder. As you may or may not know this is the best heli site on the PLANET. It sounds like you are on the right track, sort of.

If you are just doing your first flights I would suggest setting your low pitch to "0" instead of the -4 that you have now. The reason for that-especially for pilots that have been flying fixed wing is that in a panic almost everyone just slams the throttle stick down, if you have any negative you will just fly the heli strait down into the ground.

As the jerking in the movement of the collective(if I understood you right) it sounds like you have some binding going on, I'm not familiar with your heli.but, it has been discussed here that the thrust bearings in the grips are very similar but have a small difference in diameter, they can be installed in the wrong order, this will cause them to bind under load. So FWIW, that's all I can add, there are many pilots here flying that heli and will be able to give you better answers.

Sorry, I'm just a begginner too. Do you have a computer simulator of some sort? What you're describing sounds like my first hover practice, not long ago, getting the feel for first catching the drift away from 'perfect home hover' then to trying to anticipate where the drift will tend toward.
I had a pro at a fun-fly trim mine out. It was nearly perfect, I just needed someone to tell me so and show me that it actually could fly! Then I tried solo and promptly cracked up.... This is AFTER several months of simulator practice.
Welcome to the addiction! Have a proven pilot fly yer bird for a spin...

First Flight?

I remember well the very fist flight of my heli, it was done by a guy in the club who set it up for me--the biggest relief was actually seeing it fly, that REALLY boosted my confidence, I knew the heli would fly and that took a BIG load off my mind.
BTW, thanks Roger.

I think you are expecting some sort of stability If you can move the trims in the direction you are having to "stab" it then it will get a little less sensitive. I would set some expo or reduce the ATV a little to lessen the cyclic input. As for the balance, if I understand you correctly, you have some form of training gear. Just relocate it FWD so that the heli hangs level under the flybar.

Thanks for the input guys! I took it out for a 3rd flight today and was 300% happier with my performance. I was a lot smoother and was able to hover quite a bit.

I did lose control a few times and went shooting toward the trees but I seemed to grab control of it and bring it back to a hover pretty well.

My dad video taped it this time and here's a link to the video I captured of it.

Nice movie clip! Gee, did you put your Dad up a tree!?? Seriously, I think your heli looks fine. Looked like basic hover practice 101. As soon as you are able to comfortably land w/o slamming the heli down, take off the training gear til you learn 'nose-in'
Good Luck!
