I just recently fried the engine in one of my Intrepids,( OS 61 SXWC,overheated, crappy exhaust, leaned to much), anyway, when I was putting it back together, I noticed the fan blades seem to be facing the wrong way for the rotation of the engine, they are facing away from the rotation, rather than facing into the direction of rotation. This is the fan that came with the kit, the up-graded CNC fan. I had another one in my spare parts box, this one has the fins facing the other direction. I put this fan back on, there now is alot of air being blown out of the bottom of the shroud, although I don't know what it was like before, I never checked it. Why would there be 2 different fans, and which is correct? BTW, this is the 2nd engine I have overheated in this heli, making me wonder now.........Coop

Coop, the fan facing backwards is the 3D fan. The one facing towards rotation is the gasser style fan. Larry gave me a gasser style on a glow hub, to use with my 91. At that time, Larry said that their tests showed the gasser style fan on a 60 motor could overcool it. Call Larry and ask him about it.

I'm not so sure overcooling is possible. What is possible, is using a fan that has too much aerodynamic drag, thus cancelling any gains from the cooling benefit. Those 3D fans have a good balance between parasitic drag and cooling.

Hey Coop,

Al is right, the fan going the other direction is for the Gasser.

What is meant by overcooling the engine is that the engine likes to run at a given temp, say 240, The gasser fan will keep it cooler than that, and won't let the engine produce max power.

Also the gasser fan does take more power from the engine. If you run it on a .60, you're stealing power from it. The .91's and gassers have power to spare, and need the additional cooling.

Well. I'm not trying to go against the flow here, but I have a new OS 61 in there right now, I flew it tonight, and I didn't notice any less power than when I had the other fan on it, so I am going to leave the "gasser" fan on it. Cooling is such an important issue in a heli engine, if it takes a little power to keep your engine cool, well, that is the way it is. To hot robs power too, and shortens the life of the engine. Looking at the other fan, I have to wonder how it directed any air down over the engine anyway, the fins are facing the wrong way....Kinda like putting a propeller on a boat backwards and trying to go forward, it works, but not well. We'll see if this engine lasts longer than the previous 2, my flying style is more scale than 3D, max power is not #1 priority, kinda thinking I'll order a "gasser" fan for my YS engined Intrepid too,(not flown yet)..............Coop
