Hi all,

Can I just say, I love all the work in this particular part of the forum!

I'm in the process of building a mount and have a few questions....

Firstly, how do you guys work out the pivot point for your tilting mechanisms? I can't seem to find a "home" point where the servo wouldn't be constantly fighting the weight of the camera.

Second, I see almost everyone is using either gear or belt modifications to their servos to obtain pan or tilt. What advantages do these systems have over a simple ball link set-up. I am thinking that I will only need about 100 degrees on pan and about the same on tilt and to do it with ball links would be an easy option for me.

Cheers

It´s a trial and error test what you might do till you find the exactly CG point. I used a "u" alu sheet to do the test drilling more and more holes till I achieved it the I pass the measure to the definitive tilt part.
Make little holes (1mm diameter) and test it using a pair of needles, it will help you getting a more accurate results. The camera must keep the same position no matter if it ´s facing front, back , up or down. The most accuracy you can get the less stress you will induce to the tilt servo and the less feeback it will give to the system due to vibrations.
If you can achieve the needed pan-tilt degrees using bal links then there is no reason of using gears or belt systems, but if you want to slow the servo motion and adjust the stick to servo arm relation the you will need to take out the inner pot of the servo and use gears or belts to have the required degrees from a non end travel range servo.
