How many times has everyone crashed. About how much money do you think you have spent in repairs. I have been flying for about a month. I have crashed once, plus a boom strike before I ever got flying. I have replaced 2 tail booms + tail drive tubes, two tail rotor bellcranks, a set of blades, flybar, a main shaft, upper frame, the tail support pieces, tail blades, and probably something else.
In total probably about 160 dollars of good stuff. Plus stuff I replaced that was worn from when I bought it used. But I loved spending every penny.

Crashes

Sorry for the double post, somehow I managed to post in mid thought. Probably the same demented process that leads to the problem in post #2 below. Steve.

Crashes

The number long since surpassed the total of all the fingers and toes in this room. The cost??? Who knows, but the total is in the tens of thousands. I've been at it for about 14 years and consider myself an expert crasher. Steve.

Six Figures

Crashes! You must be kidding! I have painted 40+ Xcell canopys for myself and not all crashes needed a new painted canopy! I have also painted multiple canopys for my Alpha 2, and Cyclone. Figure in a few Raptor canopys, and 8 or 10 shuttle lids and you have many, many, many, many crashes. Add on all the other extra stuff you need to repair and assemble a machine and look out! In the last 20 years of flying I am sure that I have gone six figures on this hobby.

Why own a house when you can fly RC Helis!

i have had 4 crashes since June 01, only 1 was my fault

1st crash: mixing arm broke in flight, heli was about 3 feet off ground and crashed into the side of a brick house training gear was on, broken parts were blades, mast, feathering shaft and mixing arm

2nd crash: flying when it was near dark, got the heli down below the trees and lost sight, blades survived surprisingly, main gear stripped, skids were mangled, and needed the necessary shafts.

3rd crash: I claim responsibility for.... tried a loop, but left my D/R at 40%, couldnt quite pull out of it this was the most expensive. $80 in parts (nexus)

4th crash: fuel line fell off, I did a half a$$ed auto from about 30 feet with 2 degrees of negative pitch, just broke the landing gear on this one.

ive had some lucky crashes, only had to replace the boom once, that was from my attempted loop! which i have mastered well... almost!

Crashes/Money

I am really new at helis,..use to fly a Kavan Jet Ranger, crashed it about the sixth flight. I am 44 years of age and have been flying and crashing
planes since I was 15. Did a stretch of 7 years without a single crash, plenty of IFE's though!

I am getting use to a Hornet at the moment, it is difficult because my mind really works in fixed wing. I have plowed it in a few times, but I do not consider a crash unless it takes new parts or more money to get airborne again.

I know for a fact that my crash expenses over the years is approx. $120,000.00 U.S. I have actually taken a brief look at the dollars involved in the hobby when I was about 40, I knew it would be high, but it was a mind F777777.

I will speak about one, the most expensive crash I have to date,...a Jet Hanger F-4E Phantom, ducted fan twin 90s, and custom alloy retracts, custom build help. A beautiful aircraft and huge! Totally destroyed at my own fingers during an inverted pass gear down fffaaassstttt.

Had $8000.00 in the F-4 and $2500.00 in the Futaba radio gear.
It was a total loss I say because after it happen, I threw the Tx. as high and as far as I could down the runway.

This is an expensive hobby even if you go at it cheap, and if you don't
go cheap and have to have the newest and the best, like me,..and think
at exactly the wrong time that you have"The Right Stuff" it is almost financially irresponsible to pursue such a hobby.

I have not given in yet.

Since July 00

Raptor 2 2 dumb thumb
Shuttle 4 2 dumb thumb; 2 mechanical failure
Freya 2 mechanical failures
Sceadu 2 mechanical failures

Cost = I refuse to add it all up cause I don't want that to be an issue in my mind.

Well, let's see...

Back in '93 or so when learning w/dad in backyard on a Concept, crashed on a Whiteman training stand (tipped over).

dad crashed on first outing for Forward Flight (tail drive-wire broke) (same concept)

summer 2001 (got back in). Got good at forward flight w/ Concept, but Muffler screw broke -- result: scared pilot (looked like/sounded like it got hit by a SAM) = bad crash...
Next one, flying in a strong wind, too high, too overconfident... chopper got too far away, lost orientation = managed to "land," but it tipped over. Then while walking over, hit the throttle stick with leg = burn clutch

Flown a gallon or so on the rappy, no crashes, flies great, ready to start some acro!

Ok you asked for it... I started October 2000.

Shuttle ZXX - around 8 times. 2 rollovers, the rest boomstrikes.

Shuttle RG - 1 time, skids hit the ground coming out of a loop ending up with a boomstrike.

Vigor - 2 near misses. Too expensive to learn on, sold it.

Freya - 12 times.

2 rollover crashes due to bad 401 gyro
1 inverted crash, brain fade coming out of a loop.
1 mid-air collision.
1 mid-air boomstrike resulting in $500 damage
3 crashes from inverted flame-out (stupid stock clunkline)
4 random boomstrikes from hard landings and botched autos.

I don't dare add up the receipts... I will just scare myself out of the hobby.

Rules of thumb.

DON'T USE CREDIT CARDS, Keep your hobby expenses cash. It's bad enough buying parts after a crash, it's worse if you crashed and you haven't even paid the bill yet.

I plead the 5th

Other than that let's just say my last crash resulted in my replacing my X-Cell ST with an SE, which should be ready to fly any day now. Aerobatic autos are fun, until you screw one up.

All model helicopters come with a hidden expiration date, which upon reaching either crash or self destruct in flight.

Hmm

Ive had two in the 4+ years Ive been flying, had 6 different heli's and both were not due to my own dumb thumbs, one was a roll servo went bad in air and couldnt level it out-Xcell60... second was concept SRT, wire drive tail set screw came out in flight, minor crash. Thats it!

30 helicopters!!!!!!!!!!! im sure this isnt the right advice but...... GIVE IT UP DUDE!!!!! I have a buddy like you, he has gone through about 35-40 airplanes, mostly ARF's he flies good but he ends up in stupid crashes, lands in trees... his last crash was into a goose! i felt bad for the goose, i tried to find it, I think it was hurt! before that he had a nice HOG BIPE (biplane) he got it RTF for $300 he must have gotten a whole 10 flights out of it before it was all over the ICE, lost signal and it crashed into the lake, we fly on the lake in the winter... no better place! there was pieces scattered in a 200 foot radius! the last crash i saw before that, he took his new thunder tiger biplane, took off across the wind and he could control it, the wind out powered the plane and it crashed into the pavement, then 10 minutes later he was on his new trainer that he got from someone, took off and the motor died, 10 feet after take off, and he landed and it hit a fence, the wing caught a pole, spun it around and took the opposite wing tip off, after that he was so pissed he was gonna take his 3rd plane and crash it streight into the ground but he couldnt get it started! then... the crash before that... a few days earlier he crashed that plane into the basket ball hoop at the school we fly at, the plane was a READY ON FLOATS, but he had the wheels on it, it was a durable plane, its ABS plastic? he killed the stock wing from doing nasty maneuvers, so he tossed on a spare wing from an AVISTAR and killed that! last April me and him had a mid air collision, i had an AVISTAR and he had a MUT of a PT40, he was goofing off and i was doing some high speed laps, I got into his air space, the planes were pretty far out from us, we tried to avoid each other, when i saw him i pulled up and ended up taking his wing off and then mine came off... it was a mess what are the odds of that happening though so far away?, i ruled it my fault and bought the guy a new plane, got him a new AVISTAR, that thing lasted a week.. the AVISTAR is rated as a SPORT TRAINER, its more aerobatic than a standard trainer, as the AVISTAR wing is almost completely flat, no diehedral (thats not spelled right!!!!?) so whats the guy do? pulls out of a full speed, full throttle nose dive, and the wing snaps! he had one about a year earlier that had a metal spar between the wings, this one was wood and just didnt hold up.!
