e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > Any LDO or swtich voltage regulator parts #s?

I'm having trouble bringing myself to fork over $30+ for a $3 part.

Has anyone identified a good LVD or switching regulator that can handle 5A typical and has no or low external part count?

I know they're out there...

Thanks

You might check out the Micrel 37502 LDO.. They may have other suitable devices as well. 5 Amp minimum guaranteed output, although the input is limit to 6.5V max.

THanks for the pointer. I couldn't get to that part through the link you posted, and their selector guide doesn't get that part's datasheet either, but I kind of fudged it and came up with this link..

http://128.121.162.80/Prod_Pgs/MIC37xxx%20Prod%20Pg.pdf

THat does seem to be a good part, though Vin is limitged to 6v. But their selector is very nice, I'm sure I can find something on there that would do.

Thanks!

have you tried

www.digikey.com
www.mouser.com

a quick 'ldo regulator' search on
digikey turned up a huge number
of candidates.

Yes I did try those sources, and they do turn out a huge # of parts, but if you look at them individually you find none with the desired characteristics, either they have a large external parts count, or Vin has to be Vout+2V or more, or they can't supply 5A continuous. etc. Basically the only ones I've found that are close are by specialty suppliers.

I'm just going to sell my 5 cell packs and buy some 4 cell packs again. If I have to pay $30 for a regulator, I may as well just buy the 4 cell pack and have fewer points of failure.

The beefiest LDO I found was from TI.

I think it was rated at 5 A (maybe 10 A). If you really were operating it at 10 A you would have to be thinking about a heatsink. It has a shutdown pin, so you can do the "perfect switch" thing.

Sorry, I don't remember the number, but it you go through the selector guide on the TI web site you should find it.

I do remember that Digikey, etc. didn't list it.

LTC have a 3 A LDO that you can connect in parallel without external components. That should get you close to 6 A, depending how will they current share.

I assume you are going to be building your own PCB to mount these parts. If so, do you trust your skills enough to build your own reg, and risk your machine in case of a failure. I have found that by the time you build your PCB, add up all the parts and connectors, you come close to buying that $30 reg from the store. Just a thought. I think a lot of people are using the 5-cell packs with no regulator anyway. Do a search.

1. Yes I trust my skills at making a PCB, but for the type of regulators I'm looking you don't need to make a PCB.

2. I was one of those people using the 5 cell pack without a regulator. That is until I bought a GY401 gyro and 9253 servo, which will fry on a fully charged 5 cell pack at > 7V. Analog electronics can get by with some voltage variation, digitals are much more sensitive.

Thanks for the info, I will look for the LTC and TI parts.
