Beginners Corner > Nexus hovering probs, and my first SOLO!

My training gear fell apart today at the field... lost the rubber bands to hold it on, and said the heck with it and tried it without... I SOLOED!!!! WOOHOO!! No boom strike, no crash.. and forward flight!! Did many many takeoff's and landings!! I love RealFlight G2!!!! I was doing nose-in hovering too!! I think torque rolling the cap 232 a foot or 2 above the ground helped.. since I am used to seeing rc models from any angle now. I didn't get disoriented. It flies so much better without training gear, but I'll probaly buy some rotopod gear for it just to be 100% sure I'm ready for life after training gear. I did get a LOT of vibration resonating through the airframe though with them on... and none with them off.

Should I just bite the bullet and forget about training gear??

I know this topic has been covered before, but I cannot find it on a search.. sorry...

My question is this.. The collective seems un-precise. I can be hovering about 8 feet up, and all of a sudden it drops like a rock till I put in a lot more collective, then it shoots up.. It was not windy.. quite calm.. so I know it was not the wind all of a sudden stopping.

I was wondering what upgrades (besides a different heli ) I should look into to help tighten up the collective?? I'm guessing pitch slider bearings and metal mixing levers?? Anything I should be checking?? The linkages seem relatively tight. I'm going to rid myself of those darn z bends though, and put some ball links on that I just bought.. and try to tighten up things a bit more.

Any more suggestions to look for???
Thanks!!

You need to check your collective to see if it moves freely up and down. Sounds like its tight and the servo has to struggle to move it up and down, thats why its jumping so much. What kind of a servo is on the collective? is it old? As far as the training gear goes its up to you if you can takeoff and land without it, why put it back on. dont waste your money on Nexus upgrades. the nexus is only good for one thing learing the basics. Fly the crap out of it and get something better.

Thanks!! I have a new Rappy 30 with just about every upgrade part to build.. and a Concept 46vr.. so I'll just play around with the Nexus for now.. was going to put a scale body on it later on down the road. The collective has a standard Futaba 3001 servo on it, and I'm not sure of the age.. I bought it used.

It was just weird. I'm glad I was about 20-30' up.. It was hovering, then dropped till I hit head high level before it jumped back up again, at almost full collective. I'll have to check into this a bit more.

Thanks

I had the very same problem with my ergo 60. When i was trying to go up alittle higher it was like nothing would happen then all of the sudden...BANG!! i was 20 ft higher than i wanted to be. The collective had a tight spot in it and the servo had to stuggle hard till it got past the tight spot. Kinda a scary feeling when your a newbie like i was and this happens. Seemed that the washout arm bushings were tight causing the bind when the collective moved. worked the bushings with some triflo for about 30minutes by hand and been good to go since! And in My opinion if you are into FF and doing nose in hovering i would seriously skip the training gear. You also said you had some vibration resonating .......... when i bought rotopod for my ergo it vibrated so hard and bad that i had to ditch it for the cheap heli-max set...wasted 60$ on the deluxe set....oh well.... after i gained confidence to try it with the gear off i have never looked back at it again. and you said you did some nose in......well i wasnt even at that stage when i threw the gear away. Do what makes you confortable though.......just dont make the gear a crutch. Wes

I've got a Nexus and it does the same thing. I've checked all the servos and their linakges. Not binding, at leats when it's static and on the ground. Seems like to me that small breezes seem to cause it to jump up or down. It may be my head speed and the heli is just a little twitchy. Keeps me on my toes though when it jumps up or down

Same problem on mine

Ive also got a Nexus and it does the same thing. Ive tried all kinds of upgrades and fixes but it still does it. Ive gotten used to it doing it and all you can really do about it is fly the heli.

good luck

I'm glad you mentioned that about the rotopod.. I was using a helimax and it vibrated.. Hate to think what that would have done if the rotopod vibrated worse for you!!!!!

I guess I'll bite the bullet and fly without my safety net now.. I've only put 4 tankfulls of gas through it so far ... but so far, it's not as hard as the former heli pilot in our club told me it was going to be.. I guess it is easier with more modern heli's than the really old equipment.

Thanks again!
