Crashed? Discussion and Photos > First crash today but still smiling.

Well it had to happen sometime and I guess today Mr. Murphy finally found me. I took my Ergo 50 CCPM out today for a few quick flights before it got dark. I got two good flights in at first, just practising my nose in hovering, then some F.F along with some flying in IDLUP (3D) mode to get a feel for the difference in pitch response.
On the third tank I decided I wanted to do a loop but just couldn't talk myself into it so decided to try a stationary roll from a hover. Well the first roll was not pretty but ok. Did another one abit better and then another progressively getting over the butterflies. Needless to say I was grinning from ear to ear and having fun. Then I decided to try doing a roll then another one right after it.
This is when Mr. Murphy decided to show up.
First roll was fine but stupid me forgot the 3 mistake high rule, so during the 2nd roll at the point I was inverted the tail was droping and the heli started to travel backwards not to mention lose altitude. Well the tail fin clipped the ground so of course the tail blades hit and broke so the heli did a quick piro until the mains hit the ground making that distinctive thud along with the puffs of grass flying. Quickly flipped the T. Hold switch then killed the engine and walked over to view the remains. It all happened in a flash.
The usually stuff is broken or bent but amazingly enough the FG canopy was untouched, skids are fine, frame not bent.
Will know more once I tear it down and inspect all the bearings, shafts, links, servos etc.. The amazing thing is that I was not cursing mad. I was actually laughing and still had a smile on my face because I had done my first roll. Can't wait to get it all fixed up and try some more. Of course I will be more carefull and do them much higher. It could have been alot worse but G2 has really helped alot.

Here are some pics.

Crash

Well, Well, Well, now you have a taste of what a real heli pilot is and you have successfully graduated to a new level. Being able to keep smiling is the main issue and then fixing it and get going again. The success of flying is learning from murphy. You have just learned.
By the look of the pictures, I think that it will be flying before very long. It always looks worse than it is.
Best of luck and I'll see you next week.

HEHEHE... Well pretty much all the parts on order except for the t/r blade grips which I will have to try and find someone that has them in stock. Lucky I had a spare set of MAH mains and t/r blades that I forgot about so the cost this time around is not too bad.

Decided to take the Rappy 60 out today for a few trimming out flights just to get back on the horse, so to speak. Everything came back home in one piece this time. :

Glad to see you taking the crash well. Some people really take it hard but one thing I have learned with helis is crashing is just part of learning.

While I agree that "crashing is part of learning". This forum gives us all the oportunity to "learn without crashing" by folks like you who share your experiences. I have learned both from my own errors and the erros of others. I don't think I could afford to learn all of them by myself. Thanks for the report and I can fully endorse the "3 mistakes high" rule.

best of luck on the re-build.
