Model Helicopter World mag rant, subscription cancelled

I'm disgusted, do they think that we are all completely stupid?

I've just received my July copy of Model Helicopter World (MHW)magazine, what a waste of trees.

So why am I so angry? I'll tell you, apart from the 30 pages of advertisements (and I include "Close encounters" and "Sales pitch") 3 articles stand out as being almost completely irrelevant and 1 article, albeit very good, has been lifted word for word from a well known website!

1. Piccolo fun review:

Well some of you may say that this is a new product and warrants a full review, I say tosh, this is essentially a Piccolo without the upgrades, just because Ikarus have changed their marketing, made a few modifications and handed over the cash for double page adverts we have to put up with at least 2 pages of poxy piccolo every month.

2. Fury Expert 60 review:

The second paragraph of this 4 page article admits that they have reviewed essentially the same model no less than 3 times!!! I'm sick of hearing about it!!!

3. Simon Lockingtons article about the Rotorua Fun Fly:

Although this article is interesting, well written and entertaining you can't get away from the fact that it has been in the public domain for many months now on Simons own Littlerotors website.

4. Stephen Bell's (Alexander) article about Budget 3d:

Very nicely written but what a waste of space. Who in their right mind would want to use a four, YES FOUR, channel radio plus a GV-1 to operate a heli. Yes, in the dark old days when I started flying I used an aircraft set and mechanically mixed throttle and collective because that’s all that was available but even for normal circuit flying this was far from acceptable.

In this day and age there is no reason to use a 4 channel radio then go out and buy a GV-1 for a 100 quid plus when a suitable TX (sanwa or hitec) can be purchased for similar money NEW and will have enough channels and mixes to operate the machine safely, what happens when the GV-1 throws a magnet? and can be used on more than 1 machine. Just another example of the muddy thinking we are being subjected too from certain quarters. For goodness sake if anyone came to me and said they were going to do this I would give them my old JR x347 and tell them not to be so retarded

Rant over, flame suit on…

Twin_Squirrel;

I have to agree with some of your points also. There are waaaay too many articles on the picollo. Still dont want to buy one.

A four chanel radio for a heli is a Joke, no disgrace. I thought it was a well know fact that minimun should be a 6 channel radio if you intend to continue with the heli hobby.

I wonder how many people actually buy it?

I say this because I have yet to find a newsagent that stocks it. The same newsagents stock upto 4 different mainly fixed wing mags.

I've seen it for sale in model shops but probably only about half of those.

Since most of my heli purchases have to be by mail order I rarely get chance to purchase a heli magazine.

Doesn't sound like I'm missing much though.

Cheers,

Nigel

Good on you Mr Squirrel

MHW is such a joke, I always imagine a couple of people sitting in a crappy little porta cabin with a 1957 typewriter. Why do they bother to review things when they always give positive conclusions? There is no excuse for such pisspoor journalism. Its more like a confirmation report that xyz heli actually flies. Great. So what does it cost to repair? Whats the best engine pipe combo, etc, etc, how does it compare to its competitors?

As for 'Turning and Burning'.... words fail me.... the writer urgently needs lessons in brevity.

I bet they're a wild bunch of whacky characters really

Alexander,

As I think you are aware your post does not apply to me. I have a mid range radio, low end heli, and a low end engine. I have re-read your article and although very compelling has no relevance to "budget 3d". as I explained in my post the job could be done better (and cheaper) with a low end Heli radio (as you well know). You consistently qualify your posts with "I have no agenda" or "unlike some, I am impartial", please carry on, the more I see your work the more I am convinced otherwise.

This post was not intended as a personal attack, in fact, it was only when I re-read the article whilst writing the original post that I realised it was you, strangely enough I was no longer surprised.

On the flip side

The current issue of MHT is pretty decent. B and W so if you like pretty colors, its not for you.
Interview with TB, Input from several on the BigBlock engine trend, an OK article on learning autos and yes a building review of the Fury Extreme. In the back is more accurate scale to glue on your helimax and MA pitch gauges to make them more accurate. Worth the 5.00 price for this alone.

giheli,

Where might I get a copy of that publication, cost and pretty colours are not an issue for me, just the facts that's all I need.

Cheers

I purchased a year subscription from the MHT website.

www.mht.net

They use a paypal account. I don't know about single issue, but its a 4/year pub and only a 20.00 dollar commitment. My 1st copy arrived at my door 4 days after placing the order. You can start with the current issue or with the next. Check the appropiate box. You can also get a collection of back issues from Ricks RC ca 35.00 I think on a disk.

Shake well and good luck,
Brian

I have to say that most of the contributors to MHW are highly knowledgeable and experienced (Stephen is one), I suppose it is the editorial I object to.

Bring back Jim Davey and give Jon Tanner a commercial editorship, perhaps we might then get a factual and relevent but still profitable mag.

Cheers

"it was only when I re-read the article whilst writing the original post that I realised it was you, strangely enough I was no longer surprised"

ROFLMAO!

Next months articles will probably be one of the following:
How to carve your own wood blades.
How to assemble a helicopter using only a swiss army knife.
How to poke an eye out with a wooden flybar paddle.

Stephen, " I hope many read and enjoy something original that has never been tried before" you probably dont realize this but that statement is a perfect description of the darwin awards

Hi guys,
I've only just seen this thread, but I should let you guys know that I sent in my article on the Rotorua funfly and you're right it's pretty much word for word (I couldn't see the sense in re-writing it). I asked them if they could publish it. It's just taken a while for it to show up in the magazine that's all.

I haven't seen my copy yet, hopefully it'll be here shortly.

I would like to do more things on my site that MHW does such as kit reviews, but the fact is I can't get my hands on kits especially here in NZ where there are only about two or three dominant brands (JR, Thunder Tiger and Kyosho).

I really like MHW. I can sympathise about finding new content though. Each month I send out my newsletter and can sometimes find myself struggling for content!

I partly agree about this months issue, it wasnt as good as some previous issues...

The "budget 3d" article was a bit pointless and more fury reviews is a bit boring....

What I'd like to see is Russ Deakins modifications for the 3dnt....

decent article about that would be a good read....

Russ sems to have a lot less space in recent issues.... bit of a shame that....

Simon,

It was not my intention to make you feel uncomfortable, I would gladly pay good money to see your site decanted into print, it would certainly be a far better balanced publication than MHW. My real problem with the way they approached your article was that they didn't give a single link to your site and an editors foot note was not given to illustrate your formidable credentials.

Hi all

Well since the advent of RunRyder and also the good will of other helicopter related Internet site owners, I find MHW very poor in content. The excuse for such a comment, being the fact that I pay for what they decide I have to look at, and not myself paying for what I want to look at.

Unless they can make me changes my mind in the next 5 months, I am not going to re-subscribe. It’s almost to the point where I would sooner read the BMFA handbook.

happy flying

john
